The release dates guideline is to show users in which circumstances we use the international or the American release year in infoboxes, tables, and other displays. Generally, the American year of release should take priority, being that we are an English-speaking wiki and that a large portion of the userbase is in North America.

Overview[]

In infoboxes, the American year of release should be used instead of the Japanese or other international year of debut. For example:

Do not list Virtual Console or Nintendo Switch Online ports as the latest appearance within an infobox because they are usually identical ports to the original game. For example:

Timeline[]

An exception to the rule of prioritizing American release dates is the {{Timeline}} templates, as this aims to cover each subject's debut from an international perspective, especially as the Timeline templates tend to list Japan-exclusive media (e.g. Mario & Wario) and western-exclusive media (e.g. Super Mario Bros. Print World) alike. This means that, for example, if Paper Mario is part of a subject's timeline of appearances, the year 2000 (its Japanese and overall debut) should be listed instead of 2001.
