Mario Super Sluggers (known as Super Mario Stadium Family Baseball in Japan) is a game for the Wii console developed by Namco Bandai and published by Nintendo. It was previously known by the working title, Super Mario Stadium Baseball. It is the second installment of the Mario Baseball series, following after the Nintendo GameCube game Mario Superstar Baseball.

Mario Super Sluggers was first released in Japan and the Americas in 2008. The game was never released in Europe and Australia, even after the Wii Nintendo Selects re-release, and is the only Mario-related Wii game to have never been released in said regions in physical form. Mario Super Sluggers was re-released on the Wii U eShop in the Americas on March 31, 2016, and in Japan on August 17, 2016.

The game also has a more in-depth and more narrative-driven Challenge Mode, where, rather than only facing off against a Team Captain and a team of opponents, players interact with more characters, including a variety of various sub-characters, and play various small challenges to recruit them for their team. Up to four players can play this title, and a new feature is that players can choose which of the two team sides to be on.

Cinematic scenes[]

Opening[]

Baseball Kingdom

The large Baseball Kingdom with its eight stadiums.

The opening scene shows Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Daisy, Birdo, and Red Toad ride a yacht to the Baseball Kingdom. Peach and Toadsworth are at the entrance of the island, greeting those who are about to arrive. Once arriving, Mario and others go to the summit of a lighthouse to view the island from there.

Once arriving at Mario Stadium, Mario throws the first pitch, in which Daisy hits. The scenery immediately changes as the ball is chased after by Toad in the Peach Ice Garden until he runs into a large Freezie and turns frozen solid upon collision. He is later freed by a Blue Toad, who accidentally crashes into the Freezie (with Toad revealing that he made the catch after being defrosted). The scene readjusts to Wario City, where Wario fields the ball, only for to shoot into the air from a manhole water spout. The ball lands on Wario's head, causing him to fall backwards. At Yoshi Park, Yoshi jumps over a pipe to catch the ball, but realizing that he is going to fall, he flutters around, but falls in with the ball; all while Birdo watches and does nothing. At the DK Jungle, Diddy Kong witnesses a giant barrel coming his way until Donkey Kong smashes the barrel into fragments, giving his nephew a sigh of relief.

Back at Mario Stadium, Donkey Kong hits the ball, which is fielded by Yoshi, who then passes the ball to Peach, then to Mario, and then to Luigi. As Luigi catches the ball, Donkey Kong performs a body check, causing Luigi to spiral towards the wall. Daisy, sitting on the bench, panics, and the audience silences. Luigi regains consciousness and has held on to the ball long enough to get the final out. Mario and the rest of the team storm the field and celebrate.

The arrival of Bowser Jr.[]

At the beginning of Challenge Mode, a scene shows Bowser Jr. in his office of the playroom seeing live footage of those in the Baseball Kingdom. Bowser Jr. pulls the lever and rams his venue at the northern portion of the island. As characters from their respective home fields are caught off guard with an unexpected rumbling, Mario and Luigi go to the northern portion of the island to investigate, which turns out that Bowser Jr. and his minions have arrived from the venue that rammed into the island recently.

A hard-earned victory[]

After defeating Bowser's team in Challenge Mode, Mario and other characters are seen shaking hands and high-fiving each other as they celebrate in the middle of the infield. On the other hand, Bowser slams his bat to the turf in a fit of rage until Bowser Jr. comes to his side, realizing that now both of them lost, and that all their mischief throughout the Baseball Kingdom is reverted.

After much celebration, Mario and the rest of the crew march towards the entrance of the Baseball Kingdom, looking towards the binary sunset before the lights turn on for the night.

The final festivities[]

As night falls in the Baseball Kingdom, it becomes evident that everyone is tired and exhausted after enduring such a long day playing baseball and having to deal with Bowser most recently. However, Daisy still feels confident that there is hope and makes arrangements to host a festival at the Daisy Cruiser as a special thanks for those who saved her from being transformed into a statue by Bowser Jr. earlier.

A small regime with Daisy serving as the frontwoman marches toward the Daisy Cruiser, where the field has become an outdoor buffet with desserts and beverages. Many different characters stand at different tables one after another, having various types of desserts. At one table, Peach is between Toadsworth and the umpire Lakitu, having some crème caramel. The Kong family; Diddy, Dixie, Tiny, and Funky seem to be enjoying their share of desserts. Daisy stands at one table between Yoshi and Toadette, and a display of fireworks storm the night sky, shocking and surprising those who witness it.

After the fireworks display, Daisy immediately orders everyone present at the cruiser to pack up and report to Mario Stadium, where the source of the fireworks is actually coming from as Mario and Donkey Kong are hitting Bob-ombs towards the sky in a show of freestyle home run derby. At one point, Wario and Waluigi sabotage the cannon being used for the event, inserting a Bullet Bill that launches prematurely. Bowser arrives to save Mario by swinging his bat to counter the Bullet Bill, which freely soars to the sky and sets off a chain reaction of fireworks that carry the Wario brothers with them. Mario and Donkey Kong take a bow for their recent efforts, while the other characters watching from the benches applaud.

Gameplay[]

The gameplay of Mario Super Sluggers is similar to that of its predecessor; the main difference being the controls, with the Wii Remote adding immersion using a control scheme similar to the Baseball sub-game in Wii Sports.[1]

  • There are three control methods: Wii Remote by itself, Wii Remote and the Nunchuk, and the Wii Remote held sideways.
  • The items can be thrown at fielders in an attempt to keep them from catching the ball.

In the outfield, players can create special moves if there is chemistry between outfielders:

One outfielder tackles the ball and the ball rolls towards the outfielder with chemistry. The outfielder that holds the ball can then throw a very fast ball towards a base from the outfield. When a possible home run is hit, players can initiate a Buddy Jump. Upon jumping around another outfielder's head and pressing twice, one of the players will jump incredibly high to catch home run balls. This must be done with precise timing. Superstar Matchups return; however, it is set for captains only and occurs when the team captain is not batting first and when one runner is on second or third and two or all three runners on base (only when the runs exceed to 4 or more on the scoreboard). This also applies to RBI chance screens. While pitching, however, players will have to pay attention to the pitcher's stamina. If the character that's pitching is showing signs of fatigue (depicted by a water droplet in a bubble), their pitches will start to behave in an erratic manner. When the current pitcher has fatigue, players will have to decide to adjust the defense so that a new character plays pitcher instead. On a side note, pitchers can get exhausted even quicker if the batting team manages to make a lot of successful Home Runs. Even a Grand Slam can cause a pitcher to become fully fatigued right off the bat.

Star Skills make a reappearance in Mario Super Sluggers as well. Any player can pitch or bat using Star Skills, however, only Team Captains can use special hits/pitches. Team Players can only use Star Skills that will make the ball go faster or slower. Both teams can store up to five Star Skill attempts; they are earned as a result of well executed plays. At the end of each game, the character who has had the most potential for their team will win the MVP award, which will be recorded in the Records menu. Characters can earn MVP points by striking out opponents, executing nice plays on defense, successful hits while batting (the batter has to make it to 1st base without getting out), stealing bases, close plays, and even for error item usage. The character with the most MVP points will win the award. Also, it's possible for more than one character to win MVP if at least two characters have the same amount of points.

Buddy Jump[]

A Buddy Jump is a new technique in Mario Super Sluggers that allows a character who has chemistry with a nearby character to jump off of the other character and catch possible home runs. It is activated when jumping twice near a character who has chemistry with the player.

Buddy Throw[]

The Buddy Throw allows players with Chemistry to throw very fast.

Stadiums[]

There are a total of nine stadiums (excluding Toy Field) in all. Every Team Captain (excluding Waluigi, Birdo, and Diddy Kong) has a stadium which is based on his or her character's unique persona. Most of the nine stadiums can be played in daytime or nighttime. Mario Stadium is the only one not to feature any gimmicks in the field, making for the most realistic baseball experience. The Bowser Jr. Playroom is only accessible during the day, while Luigi's Mansion and Bowser Castle can only be accessed at night.

These stadiums are accessible when starting a new game file.

King K. Rool King K. Rool and his Kremling Krew have been after the Kongs for years. Now he's bringing his might to the baseball diamond with a powerful swing and one of the meaner charge pitches around. You should not throw pitches down the pipe.
