"Mario Meets Koop-zilla" is the twenty-eighth animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. It is paired with the live-action segment "Forune Teller."

Plot[]

Mario and friends travel to the oriental city of Sayonara to seek a weapon called Super Sushi, a delicacy that allows the consumer to double in size and strength. Unfortunately, as they soon discover, King Koopa has beaten them to the sushi and become a giant lizard named Koop-zilla (a nickname given by Toad). Koop-zilla sets out to destroy the city and even grants his enemies a chance to run for their lives. The group goes to see the sushi's inventor, Dr. T. Garden, who explains that King Koopa broke into his lab and ate the Super Sushi.

As Koop-zilla attempts to destroy the city the military gets after him. Missile attacks somehow manage to miss and Koop-zilla easily destroys the planes. A squadron of tanks attacks but is also ineffective and is literally blown away. The Marios attempt to subdue Koopzilla with a steel net by provoking him into following them and dropping the net on him. It seems to work for a while but he easily breaks out of it and attempts to step on his enemies. The group dives into the sewers. Koop-zilla attempts to reach in but is stuck with a sharp piece of broken pipe. Koop-zilla, having a low tolerance of pain, leaps away.

Afterwards, Dr. Garden whips up another batch of Super Sushi, which Mario consumes with spaghetti in order to become gigantic himself and combat Koopzilla. The two battle with neither one getting the upper hand and causing massive damage to the city. Toad makes the observation that while Mario may save the city, there won't be a city left to save. Eventually, Dr. Garden concocts an antidote. The antidote is put into a giant syringe, which Luigi injects into Koop-zilla. Shrinking back down to regular, King Koopa uses a magic potion to make a warp zone and escape.

Trivia/Goofs[]

  • This episode is a spoof of the Godzilla films, and Sayonara is a spoof of Tokyo, Japan.
  • At the very beginning of the episode, Luigi is wearing an oriental hat. But when "the earth shake" comes up and knocks the cart over, Luigi now has his regular cap on.
  • Dr. Garden's security camera apparently works more like movie cameras.
  • When Mario is eating the food that makes him grow, he has a fork at first, but in the next scene, he now has a spoon!
  • As Koopa shrinks back to normal, his size doesn't accommodate his shell since only his surroundings are animated.
