Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is a game for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U which was released in 2016, as the fifth installment of the Mario & Sonic series. This game celebrates the Rio 2016 Olympics that happened in August 2016. Like the first three installments, there is once again both home console and handheld versions, this time for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS respectively.
The game received an arcade tie-in titled Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Arcade Edition.

- This is the first Mario & Sonic game to not have Dream Events
- A similar role is fulfilled by the duel events, however, these take place in locations in Rio rather than locations from the Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog franchises.
- Dream Events return in Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
- This is the last Mario & Sonic game to have Knuckles voiced by Travis Willingham as he is voiced by Dave B. Mitchell in the Mario & Sonic series starting with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 as his voice actor was replaced in Team Sonic Racing.[1]
