Mario & Luigi: Brothership (マリオ&ルイージRPG ブラザーシップ! Mario & Ruīji RPG: Burazāshippu!?, Mario & Luigi RPG: Brothership!) is a role-playing game for the Nintendo Switch. It is a sequel to Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. Mario & Luigi: Brothership is the sixth installment of the Mario & Luigi series and the first to not be developed by AlphaDream, ever since the company went bankrupt in 2019, though many developers from AlphaDream returned to work on Mario & Luigi: Brothership. The game was released internationally on November 7, 2024.

The game was announced on the Nintendo Direct of June 18, 2024 and is the first game in the series available on a home console.[1]

Official solicitation[]

The brothers return for a brand-new adventure on the high seas! Set sail with Mario and Luigi on Shipshape Island (part ship, part island) and journey through the vast world of Concordia. Launch out of Shipshape's cannon to visit, explore, and quest your way through islands that range from tropical rainforests to bustling cities.

Meet new friends along the way, like Connie and Snoutlet (who's definitely not a pig) and encounter familiar faces from the Mushroom Kingdom like Peach and Bowser, who may help you on your journey!

You’ll have to rely on Mario and Luigi's brotherly bond to succeed. Use Bros. Moves to get past obstacles while you explore, and powerful Bros. Attacks in a dynamic twist on turn-based combat. You’ll need every edge this 'brothership' will give you to save the day![2]

In a peaceful daytime at the Mushroom Kingdom, Luigi is in panic as he is being chased by a swarm of bees in a forest near Peach's Castle. Mario calls out to Luigi as he runs spinning around him and accidentally heads off falling to a cliff before Mario takes his hand in time to save him. Soon, Mario and Luigi notice their hands begin to glow, and sees a strange portal close above them which sends the bros, and accidentally Princess Peach, Starlow, the Toads, Bowser, his son and his minions away to a different world called Concordia.

  • Jump (Overworld): If the "A" or "B" button is pressed, a specific Bro. will jump
  • Hammer (Overworld): If the "X" or "Y" button is pressed, a specific Bro. will swing their hammer. Only usable with Jump selected.

Attacks[]

  • Jump: A basic attack, A Bro. will rush to an enemy and jump on its head, while the other Bro. (who isn't doing anything) will assist by launching the other Bro. up into the air again to get another hit on the enemy.
  • Hammer: A basic attack (unlocked in early game), both Bros. will pull out their hammers, one will start the attack by charging up their hammer, while the other Bro. is behind them charging their hammer to assist the Bro. then spins the attacking Bro. and hits the enemy.

Certain Bros. have certain Bros. Attacks, these attacks can only be used in combat and require a certain amount of "Bros. Points" For you to get an excellent rating. Just like all of the other attacks, you need to hit the "A" and "B" buttons on time.

  • Bowser: The Koopa King who was dragged through the Great Conductor's portal. Bowser has made it his mission to conquer Concordia, and is therefore at odds with the Zokket Army.
  • Bowser Jr.[3]: Bowser's son who befriends a boy named Furen.
  • Kamek[4]: Bowser Jr.'s mentor.
  • Koopa Paratroopa[4]
  • Zokket: The main villain who wishes to destroy Concordia. (First appearance)

  • Koopa Troopas: Humanoid turtles that serve Bowser's army.
  • Bob-ombs: Sentient bombs that work for Bowser.
  • Piranha Plants: Venus flytrap-esque enemies that work for Bowser.
  • Shy Guys: Mask and Robe footsoldiers of Bowser's army.
  • Mettozokettoheitachi (First appearance): The footsoldiers of Zokket's army. Can be found in the Great Lighthouses and Fortress Zokket. Comes in multiple variants:
    • Regular variant (First appearance): Wears a helmet to protect itself.
    • Togezokettohei (First appearance): Wields a jack plug-esque sword.
    • Būmeranzokettohei (First appearance): Wields a ring-shaped boomerang.
    • Ringuzokettohei (First appearance): Attacks with laser rings.
    • Jettozokettohei (First appearance): A legless variant wearing a jetpack to fly.
    • Multiplying Mettozokettohei (First appearance): Used for a Monster Mania fight. These Mettozokettoheitachi are constantly multiplying due to gorging on too many 1-Up Mushrooms, as the Monster Maniac states.
  • Snaptors (First appearance): Birds that serve Zokket's army, with stretchy necks and beaks that resemble crocodile clips. Found mainly on Merrygo Island but can be found in other locations during certain sidequests.
  • Krodes (First appearance): Treevil-esque monsters that throw pipes. Found on Merrygo Island.
  • Spikelies (First appearance): Enemies that resemble Thorbs from Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. Found on the Great Lighthouse Island of the Lushgreen Sea and Merrygo Island, with the latter also having a larger-sized variant.
  • Bumbleshoots (First appearance): Hovering plant enemies with red and blue variants. The blue variant is encountered in Twistee Island, while the red variant, called "Parashoot," can be found on Raynforst Island.
  • Soreboars (First appearance): Boar-like monsters that charge. Encountered on Twistee Island.
  • Capnaps: An enemy returning from Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. Found on the Great Lighthouse Island of the Gulchrock Sea. A stronger variant called Capnap R can be found on Bulbfish island.
  • Invizilizards (First appearance): Chamaeleon-like enemies encountered on Raynforst Island. A stronger variant with a grey palette can be found on Allsand Island.
  • Magmads: Enemies resembling lava mounds, returning from Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. Encountered on Heatfreeze Island and Scorcheen Island.
  • Spiked Iceads: Enemies resembling ice mounds, based on the Icead from Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. Encountered on Heatfreeze Island and Slippenglide Island and behaves like the Magmad.
  • Guardarms (First appearance): Enemies with large hands that shield themselves. Found on Rumbla Island.
  • Sharkbones: Skeletal sharks that swim through the sand, returning from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
  • Shower Fishes (First appearance): Enemies that resemble fishes mounted with shower heads. Found on Allsand Island.

  • Shipshape Island: An island that has been converted to a ship. It is the hub of the game.
  • Lushgreen Sea:
    • Rumbla Island: An island filled with lumpy, hard objects, including the sacred Rumbla Dish. The island's inhabitants love to make things, with their artwork displayed throughout the island.
    • Twistee Island: An island for tourism, with abundant nature. The island's main landmark is the Twisten Sprout (or Twiss Tree in Japanese), which grows in response to music.
    • Raynforst Island: An island with a jungle biome, where rainy weather perpetually visits.
    • Florall Island: A grassy island full of flowers
    • Great Lighthouse Island: One of the Great Lighthouses. Zokket and his forces turned this place into a base for their Glohm experiments. The Gobblick is encountered here.
    • Islets:
      • Smahl Islet
      • Morsel Islet

  • Color-Full Sea:
    • Desolatt Island: An island with various old buildings. Snaptors frequently come here to kidnap the residents.
    • Merrygo Island: A circus-themed island whose landmark is a maze which also serves as the island's main attraction.
    • Lottacoins Island: An island with a city, having contributed to the economic development of Concordia.
    • Allsand Island: An island consisting of a desert with Quicksand pits. There is a small oasis on the island.
    • Great Lighthouse Island: Another Great Lighthouse, this one surrounded by a giant wall. The residents here were forced to produce Glohm by Zokket's forces. The Sharpcask is encountered here.

    • Bulbfish Island: An island stuck in perpetual darkness. It is known for its Bulbfishes, which have become the source of its name.
    • Heatfreeze Island: An island comprised of magma on one side and ice on the other. The Skorcheen and Slippenglide folks can be found here.
    • Skorcheen Island: A volcanic land where Princess Burnadette and her people (Doctor Vulko included) live.
    • Slippenglide Island: Prince Chilliam and his people live here. The island's climate is cold, and the main landmark is a massive ice cream bowl
    • Great Lighthouse Island: This one has become a Glohm factory thanks to Zokket's foul work, powered by magma and ice. The Pipegunk is fought here.

      • Bitsi Islet

  • Gulchrock Sea:
    • Offandon Island: Bowser and his minions have brought this island under their control, turning the islands inhabitants against the Bros.
    • Wayaway Island: Not a true part of the Gulchrock Sea, this area was not connected to the rest of Concordia before Zokket desecrated the Uni-Tree. Bowser set a fortress here.
    • Great Lighthouse Island: A smaller Great Lighthouse than the rest. Zokket left it alone due to the lighthouse being too small for his plans.
    • Islets:
      • Mynnor Islet: Bowser took over this islet.
      • Cozett Islet
      • Daintye Islet: Some Mettozokettoheitachi took this islet.
      • Nanoh Islet

  • Fortress Zokket: Zokket's base of operations, where he cultivates Reclusa's egg.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first Mario & Luigi game of the following:
    • To not be developed by AlphaDream since it ceased operations after filing for bankruptcy on October 1, 2019.
    • To feature 3D models for all characters.
    • To not involve Bowser in the final boss battle.
    • To feature Kevin Afghani as the voice of the titular characters instead of Charles Martinet, due to the latter being retired from doing voices for the Mario franchise as of August 2023.
    • To not feature Yoko Shimumora as music composer, with Hideki Sakamoto taking her replacement role.
  • Brothership is the last Mario game release to feature Samantha Kelly voicing Princess Peach and Toads (albeit via archived voice clips), as both roles were recast starting with Mario Kart World.
  • Some of the cutscenes in this game is similar to the scenes in the Universal Pictures & Illumination Movie The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
  • This game marks the first time that Starlow appears in where she is given a minor role apart from her being a traveling companion in the previous three games.
  • An error message "A System Update is required to use this card." bricks the switch cartridge game by default preventing the game Mario & Luigi: Brothership from working on the offline Nintendo Switch consoles not connected online and can only work if the game is connected to the Eshop store to unlock the bricked game.
