Main-space articles

The intention of adding badges to MarioWiki is to motivate editors to contribute to articles. The badge rewards the editor's contributions whether it is creating a blog, updating information or creating new articles. However, rewards can also mislead people to edit milk for the sake of badge farming.
Edit milking is continuously editing on the same page a on the same day. This edit milking prevention is only applied to mainspace pages as the are the only pages where editors' edits counts towards badges. Making constitutive edits on different pages in attempt to find a way around this rule will still be counted as edit milking. For example, making five edits in a row on the Mario page, then making five edits in a row on the Luigi page, and five edits in a row on the Princess Peach page. This is to counteract the loophole. Editors repeatingly continue to perform this action will receive a warning or block. Instead of edit milking, we encourage you to edit as many pages as possible. If you are not sure what your edits look like, click the "Preview" button to be sure that you are happy the way the page is presented.

Creating page with no content

Creating a page without content is considered spam. The page will be deleted depending on the staff's judgement. To start creating a page, at least follow the MarioWiki:Manual of Style.

Renaming page

It is better to rename a page with a staff's permission. Notify an administrator before renaming a page even when it is to the correct name. This will help in making sure to correct any mistakes on the navigation templates as well.

However, Renaming pages to something inappropriate or out of context will result in a lengthy block, depending on how serious it is.

Fanon articles

MarioWiki aims to add relevant information based on facts. MarioWiki is not fan fiction. If you want to write your own fanfiction, go to Super Mario Fanon and Fantendo unless you add fan fiction to your user page and user page only.

Categories

Before a category is added, it must be notified to an admin before doing anything else. Additionally, do not add a category to a page where it doesn't pertain. For example, adding the "Enemies" category to a page where it is a Boss.

Stand alone game categories (such as the "Super Mario World" category) should only be added to pages where other categories can't be added. However, the appropriate category should be added later at some point.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a form of writing where you claim someone's work as your own. Please do not copy from a source word-to-word from another website. You may use sites as a source on what to write down for a page. However, copying everything word for word is not accepted.

First time offenders will receive a single warning. Continuing to plagiarize pages will result in a 3 month block. If there is continued use of plagiarism after the 3 month block, then the next block with be infinite.

Other

  • Do not add anything inappropriate onto a page. This includes words, images, or even comments. This is a form of vandalism and will result in a permanent block if it continues.
  • Do not link to everyday common things. This means linking to things such as houses, water, etc.

Templates

General rules
  • Administrators and content moderators are allowed to create templates for main-space articles.
  • Any editor is allowed to edit templates if they are "Data" or "Navigation" templates. However, if users perform unruly acts on them, the page will have to be protected at a period of time.
  • Templates created for main-space articles must be approved by an admin or a bureaucrat.
  • Admins are allowed to edit templates or create documents for them.
  • Non-admins that noticed something wrong with the template, they are to notify the admin. Then the admin must fix the mistake themselves.
  • Main-space templates are meant to be for main-space articles. User templates are meant to be on user pages. Do not place the templates to where it does not belong.
User pages
  • All users can create templates for user pages.
  • No infobox must be on a user page, except {{Infobox User}}.
Navigation templates
  • Any user is allowed to create navigation templates.
  • If another user is already adding navigation templates to a page where it belongs. Other users cannot add the same navigation templates to those pages as it may interfere with the other user's work (such as making small fixes to the page). If you would like to add a navigation template to pages on your own, please notify the admin (specifically the one creating navigation templates).
    • If a navigation template that belongs to main-space articles is on a userpage, the staff witnessing it will remove the template.
  • Five or more navigation templates on one page can go fit in the {{NavTemplate}}.
Notices
Stubs
  • Add stub templates to pages that are below 800 bytes. Pages that lack certain information, or is too sufficient is considered a stub.
    • This does not apply to pages where no further information can be added or articles with a {{Mentioned}} template.
Broken Links
  • If an article has more than five broken links of different subjects, add the {{Broken Links}} template on top of the article.
    • Example:
      • Broken links: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, Yoshi (character) (Needs a broken link template)
      • Broken links, Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, Bowser (Does not need a broken link template)
Construction templates
  • Add the Construction template on articles you are currently working on. Do not add the construction template to one article only to never come back to the page.
  • Add the Construction template to pages that need a lot of work. Do not just add the template to pages that are stubs but only need a little more work. For example, if a page has a bunch of sections with section stubs on it, then the template can be added but work must be done on it at a later time. Do not add it to stubs that require little more work on it.
  • When you add a construction template to a page, you must be dedicated to working on that page soon instead of later (or never). If you know you are not going to add more to the page at any given time, then add appropriate templates to the page that need work (such as the InfoboxNeeded template for pages without infoboxes).

Protecting/Protected Pages

  • When protecting pages, only protect pages if there a massive amount of edits being made by a single user.
    • When a user made more than five edits on the same page in the same day, that page is to be protected for 24 hours and the user must be warned.
    • For future release games, the page must be protected until the game is released. If the game has a confirmed release date, then the time for the page to be unprotected should be on that date. This rule is meant to protect against users adding false/unconfirmed information.
