"Mario's Magic Carpet" is the fourth animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. The plot parodies the story of Aladdin. The episode's corresponding live-action segment is "Marianne & Luigeena."

Synopsis[]

Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad are traveling through a desert in search of Aladdin's Lamp and are dying of thirst. Mario notices a waterfall, only for it to be a mirage. Mario, Luigi, and Toad ignore Princess Toadstool's warning to ignore the mirages, and try to dive into a swimming pool, only to discover it to neither be a swimming pool nor a mirage but a trampoline. Thanks to this booby-trap, they wind up in the palace of Sultan Pasbah. The Sultan tries to make the male members of the group into his slaves and to force the Princess into his harem. The group attempts to escape, but are unable to. However, while the men are led to the dungeon they find that the treasury holds the lamp.

Princess Toadstool proves to be far too strong-willed to be forced into Pasbah's harem, so the Sultan decides to put her up for sale. Shortly afterward, King Koopa shows up to buy her (albeit unsuccessfully). In order to free the Princess, the Marios rub the Lamp to get the Genie. As they discover, the Genie is a rather cranky woman who's a little rusty with her power. For example, she tries a magic spell and instead produces a bad smell. In the process, King Koopa manages to escape with the Princess on a magic carpet, intending to drop her into a quicksand pit nearby.

While the Marios ask the Genie to make them fly, she only manages to hurl them into the air. Toad suggests they go to a used flying carpet shop, and they buy an old clunker carpet. The Marios try to catch up with King Koopa by disguising themselves as a dust cloud, but the Genie sneezes and blows their cover. After dropping the Princess into the quicksand (which the Marios soon get her out of), King Koopa orders for a dozen Pidgits from Pidgit Express to eat the Marios' carpet. Fed up with this, the Genie goes back into her lamp and leaves. Luckily, Luigi turns out to be able to speak the Pidgit's language and tells them that King Koopa's carpet tastes better. The Genie ends up on King Koopa's carpet and vows to make him miserable.

Trivia/Goofs[]

  • This is the first episode in which Pidgits appear.
  • The magic carpets used in this episode are portrayed as flying cars with rugs in place of the wheels and hubcaps.
  • The cover of a VHS tape released by Kids Klassics in the early 1990s shows Mario, Luigi, and Toad on a magic carpet that they never ride (it is depicted as a standard magic carpet with a steering wheel), with a genie that looks completely different than the one in the actual episode.
  • Once Koopa shows up, the lower half of the Sultan's body disappears for a few shots.
  • In this episode, the Pidgits ironically do not fly on Magic Carpets like they did in Super Mario Bros. 2.
  • The official episode synopsis (featured on Yahooligans! TV and the Mario Mania! DVD) reads, "The Marios wage a wild magic carpet battle to save the Princess from being forced into King Koopa's harem." That contradicts the actual story, though.
  • Toadstool's position in the quicksand changes between shots.
  • Although King Koopa orders for twelve Pidgits, only nine arrive.
