Magmaws are a sub-species of Blarggs. They first appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2 alongside the Magmaargh. They plug through objects rather than attempting to swallow Mario while he is on the rocks. They are rare in most galaxies only appearing in the Melty Monster Galaxy. They are constantly roaming around the lava lakes making attempts to scorch Mario and Luigi if they come near. Magmaws have since also appeared in New Super Mario Bros. U.

History[]

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Magmaw Ocean

Magmaws roaming the lava ocean eating the small planets as the go!

Magmaws first appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2. In this game, they are only seen in the Melty Monster Galaxy on the final planet which consists of a massive lava ocean. Many Magmaws are seen endlessly roaming the lava seas washing over the planets. Mario (or Luigi) must avoid them on their way to the Power Star as touching a Magmaw will burn. They are completely invincible and no attack can defeat or even make a dent in these colossal lava monsters. The small planets the Magmaws wash over are darker than the others giving you an indication for which ones to limit your time on. The Magmaws can also phase through these planets. There is also a single Magmaargh on this planet as well.

Magmaws also appear in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. In these games, they are commonly found in some levels of Peach's Castle. They emerge from the lava and attempt to scorch Mario and Luigi before slowly sinking back in the lava. Once again, they are completely invincible and cannot be defeated in any way however being under the effects of a Star will make the plumbers immune to one.

Trivia[]

  • In several Nintendo Power magazines, the Magmaws are referred to in female pronouns possibly implying that Magmaws are the female equivalent to Magmaarghs (which are referred to in male pronouns).
