The Mad Piano (キラーピアノ Kirā Piano?, Killer Piano) is a possessed piano enemy featured in Super Mario 64 and its remake, Super Mario 64 DS. Only one Mad Piano is encountered in the game, exclusively in Big Boo's Haunt.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

The Mad Piano is a large grand piano with sharp teeth on the inside. Mad Pianos appear black, and the inside of their mouth is colored red.

Behavior[]

In their calm state, Mad Pianos do not move. However, if it is approached, the Mad Piano opens its mouth and begins to attack the player with a bite, similar to Chain Chomps. It cannot be defeated, as it is invulnerable. Like other invincible enemies, it takes up three of the player's eight hit points (five if Mario is without his cap). The Mad Piano makes its only appearance in the fifth course, Big Boo's Haunt.

Trivia[]

  • Due to the Mad Piano's appearance of first appearing as an ordinary piano before suddenly beginning to violently attack Mario, many unsuspecting players were often caught off-guard when attempting to grab the Red Coin behind it, and the enemy itself is considered by the Mario fanbase as one of the most frightening foes in the franchise.
  • During his final phase in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, the King Fuwa Rover will possess a piano, transforming into the Mad Piano. Attempting to suck him up in this state defeats him.
  • Amadeus Wolfgeist can possess a piano in Luigi's Mansion 3 in a similar fashion to the Mad Piano.
