Luigi is the titular tritagonist of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.[1] He is the younger twin brother of Mario and an ally of Princess Peach and Toad.
Profile[]
Physical description[]
Luigi's appearance resembles his video game counterpart, but far more detailed. He now wears a green collared shirt rather than the basic green tee his video game version dons, his shoes now have laces, and his overalls now have a pocket on the front.
Personality traits[]
Luigi has a cowardly personality such as the instance where he ran away from Dry Bones. While Mario is calm and confident, Luigi is nervous and hesitant. Despite his cowardlyness, he still remains optimistic. Also due to their strong relationship, he is shown to be caring towards Mario and is seemingly willing to help him out while working or whenever the situation calls for it.
Speech[]
- "Thank ya for callin' Super Mario Brothas Plumbin'"

Charlie Day originally voiced Luigi with a New York accent during production. However, the accent was subsequently axed when directors told him was too much like a “Goodfellas” gangster. In response to the change, Day said “Alright! I think you’re wrong, but fine!”[2]
Remnants of takes with the New York accent can be found from the movie's promotional website SMBPlumbing, where Luigi speaks in a voicemail.[3] Day also spoke in a higher pitched New York accent (similar to Joe Pesci) regarding the movie in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel.[4]
In the final release of the film, Luigi speaks in Day's normal voice and screams in a high octave when being interrogated by Bowser.
Biography[]
Italian brothers Luigi and Mario worked for Foreman Spike before they opened their new business, Super Mario Bros. Plumbing, in Brooklyn, New York City. After being laughed at by Spike, their uncles, and dismissed by their father following the airing of their new job's commercial, Luigi follows his brother Mario to a manhole in the city causing flooding. They enter the manhole to fix the flooding in an attempt to kickstart their plumbing legacy. After fixing the pressure valve causing the flooding, they fall deeper into the sewers and wind up in a mysterious man-made pipe system that presumably no one had maintained "for years".
Luigi splits off from his brother briefly to explore and gets sucked into a pipe that leads to the Mushroom Earth. Mario follows after him in the pipe, grabbing his arm while promising that they will be fine as long as they stick together. Unfortunately the two brothers get separated, as a result, Luigi exits through a different pipe and ends up in the Dark Lands.
Luigi explores this area and was being chased by Dry Bones. After running away from Dry Bones, he entered a building and blocked the doors with his own body. Unfortunately, Bowser's minions were behind him and Luigi yells in fear. Then, he is taken hostage and is brought to Bowser. Bowser interrogates him about his brother.
Later, Luigi is trapped inside a cage above a lava pool along with the Penguin King and Lumalee.[5]
When Mario and Donkey Kong show up in the climax to stop Bowser from marrying Peach and killing his own prisoners, Luigi tries avoiding the lava he was going to be sunk into by climbing the chain attached to the cage, only to lose his grip, resulting in him nearly falling into the lava before Mario (in his flying tanooki suit) saves him from certain death. He gets more screentime when he and Mario end up back in Brooklyn when Mario mistakably used a giant Bullet Bill to make it explode in the space of cosmic warp holes.
As he, Donkey Kong, and Princess Peach play a more active role in fighting Bowser so he doesn't get the Power Star, Luigi, as a epic moment, used the lid of a sewage container from the road to protect Mario from getting burned alive from Bowser's weaponized flamethrowing mouth, he and Mario then get the power star themselves, and the two charge through the Koopa Army Bowser has sent to eliminate the brotherly duo. Single-handedly overpowering Bowser's minions, and defeat Bowser himself, destroying his castle in the process. Too tired to continue fighting, Peach then forces him to eat a mini-mushroom to shrink him and put him in a jar as punishment for his crimes. Meanwhile, the brothers are hailed as heroes by the people of Brooklyn, including their parents, Spike and Francis.
He and Mario are later revealed to have moved into a house in the Mushroom Kingdom where they work as the town's heroes and plumbers and use the Warp Pipe to travel back to Brooklyn anytime, they want.
