"Luigi, I found this cap in front of the castle a little while ago. You must have dropped it. If you want to become a full-fledged hero like your brother, you can't be so careless!"
Toad, if Luigi loses his cap in a level in Super Mario 64 DS

Luigi's Cap (referred to as the Luigi Cap in Super Mario 64 DS) is a signature clothing item worn by Luigi in all of his appearances, since Mario Bros. for the Game & Watch.

Description[]

Luigi's Cap is a green cap with an uppercase green "L" emblem, for Luigi. It is his equivalent of Mario's Cap.

History[]

Mario Bros.[]

Despite Luigi's debut being Mario Bros. for Game & Watch, his cap first appeared in Mario Bros. for the arcade which both in the artworks and in-game, the cap is green.

Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Bros. / Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels[]

In Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Luigi's cap alongside his overalls are white colored.

Super Mario Bros. 2[]

In Super Mario Bros. 2, the tip of the cap had been changed to black instead of its usual green. This happened for the Mario Cap as well. However, after this game, the Luigi Cap reverted to having a green tip.

Super Mario 64 DS[]

SM64DS Luigi'sHat

In Super Mario 64 DS, Luigi's cap is used to shape-shift into Luigi if the player is either Mario, Wario, or Yoshi. In the same game, Luigi is affected in the same way as Mario and Wario if his cap is lost. Luigi's defense and attack sharply decline while his cap is absent from his head.

Super Mario Odyssey[]

In the closet of the Odyssey, Luigi's cap can be found, and the description says "The L stands for "winner", referencing the L-shaped hand gesture usually used to denote a loser.
