Mario Tennis

"Bwa ha ha! Glad you could make it, Mario! Lucien and I are now one, allowing me to finally achieve absolute power!"
—The Lucien greets Mario in his room in Mario Tennis Aces, speaking through Bowser's mouth.

Lucien is the main antagonist in the Adventure Mode in Mario Tennis Aces. He is a sentient racket who has the power to control people.

Physical description[]

The Lucien has a golden frame surrounding his face, which as purple mesh, and five frames at his "neck." His handle is black with grey bands.

The Lucien's thralls look like their standard selves, but their bodies are wrapped in bandages, and they have glowing eyes without pupils.

In Mario Tennis Aces[]

The Kingdom of Bask was a kingdom that played Tennis as a customary sport. One racket, the Lucien, was observed to be able to control people, and had plans to take over the world. The Lucien was eventually sealed by the king of the Kingdom of Bask to keep his power in check, dividing the racket's power into five stones, while Aster watched over the Lucien.

At the present, Wario and Waluigi find the Lucien during their excavation of the Kingdom of Bask, but doing so awoke him. As if on cue, the Lucien proceeded to possess Wario and Waluigi. The duo, with the Lucien, decided to head to Marina Stadium, inflicting some damage in the process when Luigi fell under the racket's control. The Lucien lay waste to the stadium before his thralls went away. Mario and his team then sought to recover the five power stones to make sure the Lucien cannot regain his power, for if he does, the Lucien could control the world.

Mario was successful in getting the first three, but the Lucien and his thralls manage to get the last two. The two teams compete in the Lucien Cup for the Power Stones, and Mario, Princess Peach, and Princess Daisy win.

However, King Bowser Koopa arrives and he gets the Lucien, who proceeds to take control of his mind. Mario and the Lucien fight in the Temple of Bask, with Mario coming out victorious. The Lucien is destroyed as Aster drags Mario out of the collapsing temple.

Mario and his team and Luigi celebrate the Lucien's demise, though Wario and Waluigi are disappointed, considering the Lucien could have boosted their Tennis prowess. Princess Daisy then explains that they should not tamper with ancient powers.

Battle[]

When Mario and the Lucien fight, the Lucien will be held by Bowser, making him summon a force-field. In order to dispel the field, Mario has to use his own racket to launch balls at the portals and break them. The portals change their positions in response to damage, and will break if they are destroyed. Afterwards, the Lucien will summon his own tennis ball, forcing Bowser to hit it with him. Mario needs to return the ball five times, with the last return using the Zone Shot feature; he must aim after the Lucien himself. After each successful Zone Shot, the Lucien will summon tornadoes at the sides of his arena; Mario will lose time if he gets caught by one. The tornados are similar to the tornados that Petey Piranha summons in his own fight, but their colour involves a purple hue. They will also vanish when they reach the side of the arena. After the tornado attack, he will force Bowser to jump around the room thrice; the Koopa King will launch harmful purple shockwaves each time his feet strike the ground. Afterwards, the Lucien will revert back to his base pattern, and Mario must repeat his strategy from phase 1. After phase 2 is done, the Lucien uses an advanced version of his counterattack pattern, with five shockwaves and more tornadoes. Bowser will also be forced to create a fire pool on Mario's side of the court, which can cost time if Mario gets his feet burned. Mario must repeat his strategy from the first to phases to finish the fight for good, although the Lucien launches his energy ball more quickly this time, giving Mario less time to use his racket. Once the Lucien is defeated, he snaps in half and his remains emit purple energy, his head sticking itself in a wall. The temple starts to collapse around his corpse. Mario is teleported to safety as he witnesses the collapse of the temple.

Behind the scenes[]

Etymology[]

The Lucien was named after the Latin term for light, lux. In Japanese, his name is Aster (written エスター), with the character known as Aster in the English release getting the name Razu (ラズ) instead. The Lucien's Spanish and Dutch names are Lucius, while in French, his name is Jeseth (derived from French "Jeu set" and the name Seth. He is called "Luzius" in German, derived from the Dutch name, while his Chinese name is Shèngdéfēn (聖德芬), from Shèng (holy; 聖) and Défēn (score; 德芬)

Trivia[]

  • The theme that the Lucien has for his battle is a fast-pace remix of the theme that Bowser has for his own battle in Super Mario 64.
