Paper Mario

Lava Bubbles are a subspecies of Podoboo which first appear in Paper Mario. They attack by chasing Mario and his partners and by spitting fire at them. Lava Bubbles resemble a small flame with a pair of demonic eyes. They are also shown to survive outside of (or away from) lava making them appear more as fiery ghosts rather than elemental creatures. Lava Bubbles initially were usually found in volcanic areas but have since also commonly appeared in dark and gloomy places (such as Pirate's Grotto) as well.

Lava Bubbles appear in the Paper Mario series where it can be found in Mt. Lavalava in the game Paper Mario, Pit of 100 Trials and the Pirate's Grotto in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and in the Underwhere in Super Paper Mario. They cannot be jumped on as Mario and co. take damage instead. Mario can use his hammer however.

History[]

Paper Mario[]

Lava Bubble Old

Lava Bubble as seen in Paper Mario.

Lava Bubbles make their debut in Paper Mario where they can be found in Mt. Lavalava on the way to Lava Piranha. because Lava Bubbles are composed entirely of fire, they can't be jumped on and will cause damage to any attacks from above, so Mario can only harm them with hammer-based attacks of other projectiles, unless he has a Fire Shield or Ice Power badge. In battle, Lava Bubbles attack by jumping on Mario or his allies similar to the Goombas from earlier, they can also explode in the heroes' faces causing damage and possible Burn however the heroes can easily defeat Lava Bubbles with ice-based attacks. A stronger relative of Lava Bubbles called Embers also appear as enemies much later on in Star Hill.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[]

Lava Bubble New

The Lava Bubble's new appearance in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

Lava Bubbles return in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door once again appearing primarily in Chapter 5. In this game, they are found in Pirate's Grotto alongside the Embers (meaning they're about the same strength in this game rather than Embers being stronger versions) as the fiery ghosts of the sailors who disappeared centuries prior. In battle, Lava Bubbles attack by hopping on Mario and his allies or by exploding by the heroes for some burning damage and can set Mario and his partner on fire which does damage withe each turn so be sure to block against them when they do this attack. Obviously, just as before, Lava Bubbles are clearly made of fire so they are naturally immune to jump attacks as well as other physical attacks from above however they can be damaged with Hammers and other projectiles. Lava Bubbles are weak to ice-based attacks and as a result, it is recommended to use such attacks when going up against them. Lava Bubbles can also be found in the Pit of 100 Trials in floors 41-49 showing up in random battles alongside other enemies in the pit.

Super Paper Mario[]

LavaBubbleCard

As a Catch Card in Super Paper Mario

Lava Bubbles return once again in Super Paper Mario only appearing in The Underwhere hopping out of the Abyss below, just as before, because Lava Bubbles are fiery, they can't be damaged with direct attacks and deal damage upon contact however they can be damaged with the use of Cudge or Barry. Lava Bubbles only have 1 HP in this game meaning a single hit will be able to do them in.

Trivia[]

  • Despite being named Lava Bubbles, they don't really resemble an actual Bubble but rather a small flame however it could be possible that the flame is composed of the same liquid as lava.
  • The Podoboos flame-like appearance in the Mario Party series slightly resembles the Lava Bubbles without the demonic eyes.
  • In their first two appearances, Lava Bubbles are found in Chapter 5, what's more is Chapter 5 takes place on a Tropical Island in both games.
