Koopa Kurl is a Duel minigame in Mario Party Advance.

In Mario Party Advance[]

In Shroom City mode, Koopa Kurl is played at the Bowser Lab, where if the player selects to view the "scary" monster, Naval Piranha appears, and Bowser forces the player's character to face off against it in Koopa Kurl. Here, the reward for winning at Koopa Kurl is both the minigame itself and the Magic Lamp Gaddget.

The minigame is basically a game of curling but with Koopa Shells. Each character has to try and earn points by sliding Koopa Shells into a certain spot that awards points. Each character uses Koopa Shells of a different color for distinction: first player's character uses Green Shells while the second player's character uses Red Shells.

When it is a character's turn, they can adjust the aim with +Control Pad and how strong their throw is using the power bar at the bottom-right corner. If the power bar line is on the bright yellow, it is thrown slowly, but if the line is on the red, it is thrown fast.

A target-like object is on the very right of the rink: landing a Koopa Shell on the outermost ring of the target is worth 20 points; the second-outermost ring is worth 30 points; the ring near the center is worth 50 points; and the center is worth 100 points. At the middle side of the field, there is a row of colored circles: the large, blue circle is worth 20 points; the small, red circle is worth 15 points; and the small, blue circle is worth 25 points. There two narrow, yellow rectangular bars with a ×2 printed on it on the top and bottom sides of the row of circles, and if a Koopa Shells lands on one of these while already having points, their points are doubled. When a character throws a shell, it is possible for the shell to knock around any other shells on the field, which can result in either decreasing or increasing either player's point totals.

The minigame is divided into two rounds. After the first round, each character's points are saved as the Koopa Shells disappear, and the second round starts. Using a ×2 bar does not double the saved points from the first round. Whoever manages to score more points at the end of both rounds is the winner.

Trivia[]

  • The minigame title is named for how its gameplay involves curling with Koopa Shells, except "curl" was corrupted to "kurl" to form a piece of alliteration with Koopa.
  • Coincidentally, the minigame is similar to the Super Mario 64 DS minigame Shuffle Shell.
