Knuckles the Echidna, commonly known simply as Knuckles, is a red echidna from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. He made his first overall appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but his first Mario-related appearance is in the Sonic Heroes Demo included in the Mario Kart: Double Dash!! Bonus Disc.
In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, he was voiced by Dan Green, who also voiced Vector the Crocodile in that game. He was voiced by Travis Willingham from Sonic Free Riders up until Team Sonic Racing, where he is instead voiced by Dave Mitchell.

Knuckles is a playable character of the Power type, so he performs the best in events that require strength. Like the other playable characters, Knuckles has six of his own missions, the last of which is unlocked by completing the first five.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Wii)[]
Knuckles returns as a playable character of the Power type, and his special skill is the Screw Driver. Knuckles also has a Mii outfit based on him that can be unlocked by winning five gold medals in any Olympic event and then purchasing it from the boutique.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Nintendo DS)[]
Like in the Wii version, Knuckles is a playable character of the Power type, and he retains Screw Driver as his special skill, as well as the Spiral Uppercut.
In Adventure Tours mode, Knuckles is located in Frostown, where after Mario and Sonic win against Knuckles in a mission, he joins the party. Later on, in Polastraits, Knuckles is playable in his own minigame, Break the Ice!, where he has to break open a large wall of ice obstructing the characters' path.

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (Wii)[]
Knuckles returns as a playable character of the Power type, also retaining Screw Driver as his special skill. He is first seen in the opening cinematic with all of the other athletes, and there is a scene of him competing in Canoe Sprint 1000m and Football. There is also an unlockable Mii outfit based on Knuckles, and it can be unlocked by either winning it through a Scratch Card or paying ten blank cards. Knuckles can also be spoken to in London Party mode in order to play minigames and earn stickers.
Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (Nintendo 3DS)[]
Knuckles is included in the Wild Ones group, so he is only playable in certain Events. Like the other playable characters, Knuckles has his own badge that can be obtained from the badge machine.

Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games[]
Knuckles returns as a playable character, once again being a classified as a Power type character, and he retains Screw Driver as his special skill. There is a Mii costume based on Knuckles that can be unlocked by playing an event one hundred times.
In Legends Showdown, Knuckles is on the second team, along with Amy, Wario, and Waluigi.
Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo 3DS)[]
Knuckles returns as a playable character, and he retains his usual skill type, Power. Knuckles is exclusively playable in Javelin Throw and Boxing.
Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Wii U)[]
Knuckles is once again a playable character of the Power type, but unlike the Nintendo 3DS version, he is playable in all events. A Mii costume set based on Knuckles can be unlocked by completing Knuckles' Carnival Challenge, although it must be collected in two separate parts, each with their own stat changes.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020[]
Knuckles returns as a playable character once more, both in the Tokyo 2020 and Tokyo 1964 events. He is one of the characters who wears outfits that vary depending on the event. Knuckles also plays a role in Story mode.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
Knuckles makes a cameo in the Green Hill Zone stage, running through the loop in the background along with Tails and Silver. Knuckles is among the characters who has his own trophy.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[]
Knuckles reprises his role from Super Smash Bros. Brawl in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, running in the background of Green Hill Zone, along with Tails and Silver the Hedgehog. A hat and outfit based off Knuckles appears as a wearable costume for Mii Brawlers in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. Said hat was released on February 3rd, 2016, alongside other Mii Fighter hats, including a Tails hat.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
Knuckles makes his series debut as an Assist Trophy. He attacks nearby players with Homing Attacks just like Sonic, and can also burrow underground and reappear at a different location, attacking with an uppercut. He also appears as a Spirit in Spirits mode. Knuckles reprises his role as a background character in Green Hill Zone. The Knuckles Mii Hat and Outfit from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U were released as DLC, on April 16th, 2019, to coincide with Joker's release.
