Klepto is a recurring condor species featured within the Mario franchise. It is known for its tendency to steal valuables from others. Several appearances feature only a single Klepto, suggesting that it is a character, although some games feature more than one Klepto, showing that it is a species. Kleptos first appear in Super Mario 64.
Kleptos are enormous birds with big beaks. They have yellow heads and their feathers are black and white. Their feet have big talons that enable them to carry humans and other creatures.
A Klepto appears in Shifting Sand Land. Here, it carries the Power Star of the course's first mission, In the Talons of the Big Bird, and has a set pattern of flying between the four pillars within the area. By jumping at Klepto, Mario can have it release the Power Star. Klepto also has a behavior of stealing Mario's Cap while attacking him, and similar to the Power Star, Mario can retrieve the cap by swiping it from Klepto. In later missions, Klepto is located near the oasis.
Aside from the one in Shifting Sand Land, who acts the same as in Super Mario 64, another Klepto appears in Sunshine Isles, where it is carrying one of the Silver Stars, and yet another appears in the big portion of Tiny-Huge Island. The Klepto in Sunshine Isles can be encountered before the Klepto in Shifting Sand Land, as Sunshine Isles becomes accessible earlier than Shifting Sand Land. With Luigi and Wario added as playable characters, it is also possible for a Klepto to steal their respective cap.
Klepto is encountered upon reaching the Lost Kingdom as a minor boss. He grabs Cappy (who is inhabiting Mario's hat) and takes him to a pedestal. The pedestal is made up of two platforms, one that is raised, and one that is lower. When Mario uses his Ground Pound on the raised platform, the lower one raises, and the platform that got hit with the Ground Pound falls into a lower position. Klepto will flee to another platform whenever his platform is approached; if this happens too many times, Cappy will advise Mario to smack him from below somehow. To defeat Klepto and get Cappy back, Mario needs to lure Klepto to the lower platform and launch him upward. Klepto also appears in a Moon Pipe sub-area in the same kingdom and is defeated the same way.
Kleptos have made several appearances in the Mario Party series. They appear commonly on the boards and in mini-games where they usually are treated like a background character or a way to transport the characters to different areas. In Mario Party 5, Klepto appears in the form of a capsule bearing their head, and returns as such in Mario Party 6, but with the capsule renamed to an orb. One particular Klepto appears in Mario Party Advance, guarding a treasure chest in Klepto Ruins.
Board appearances[]
Shy Guy's Jungle Jam - Klepto appears at the top of the board, and will charge the characters five coins in order to transport them across the river. The characters will then grab onto his talons and will be able to control him as they approach his nest at the bottom of the board. Along the way, they can grab additional coins and may even gain extra coins from the volcano eruption.
Item appearances[]
Klepto Capsule - Klepto will grab the players by his talons and transport them to a space that is occupied by an opposing character. This is all decided by a roulette wheel.
Klepto Orb - Klepto's role as an orb has changed from his appearance as a capsule in Mario Party 5. When a character lands on a space that is occupied by a Klepto Orb, then they will be transported back to start.
Mini-game appearances[]
Paths of Peril - A Klepto can be seen flying around the background of this mini-games, and only serves as a background character.
Fish Upon a Star - A Klepto can be flying around the star-shaped island with a Shy Guy in a blimp. However, neither one of them will affect the outcome of the mini-game.
Klepto can be seen in the Shifting Sands course. Additionally, his name was misspelled Kelpto on the scoreboards.
Behind the scenes[]
Etymology[]
The name Klepto is derived from "kleptomania," which means to hoard objects and valuables. Its name also comes from the term "kleptomaniac," referring to one who likes to steal things.
Trivia[]
Klepto is the second boss in Super Mario Odyssey that does not go down in three phases (instead, he goes down in one hit), the first being the first encounter with Topper (two hits with one hit per phase), and the next two being the Mechawiggler (both encounters; 12 hits with six per phase for two phases) and the Broodals' RoboBrood (both encounters; 40 hits with ten per phase for four phases). Coincidentally, he and Topper (at least the first time) do not drop Power Stars when defeated.
Klepto is also the only boss that must be fought without Cappy, due to his act of kidnapping Cappy at the start of battle.
The way that Mario must beat Klepto in Super Mario Odyssey is similar to the Wiggler boss of Fury Volcano in Super Princess Peach, except Mario only needs to hit him with the pillar.
Klepto is one of two bosses from Super Mario Odyssey who is not fought in an enclosed arena; Dauphin Mollusque-Lanceur III of Bubblaine is the other.
