Kangaroos are real Australian mammals who have made a few appearances in Mario media. Kangaroos first appear in the The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 episode "7 Continents for 7 Koopas."

In The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 episode "7 Continents for 7 Koopas," when Cheatsy was assigned by King Koopa to take over Australia, Cheatsy uses his Magic Wand to transform the humans into Kangaroos. This effect was later undone by Princess Toadstool when she retrieved Cheatsy's Magic Wand.
In Mario is Missing!, Kangaroos are mentioned by a tourist in Sydney, Australia. The tourist states that he is interested in seeing the kangaroos and that they also are Australian mascots.
