- Not to be confused with Cannon.
Kaboombas (also simply named Cannons) are walking cannon enemies featured in the Yoshi's Island series and Super Princess Peach. They first appear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Kaboombas resemble navy-blue cannons with webbed feet. They typically attack by shooting Cannonballs which explode upon hitting the ground.
Profile[]
Behavior[]
A Kaboomba attacks by firing large cannonballs onto the ground, upon which the cannonball explodes after a few seconds. In the Yoshi's Island series, a Yoshi can defeat a Kaboomba by either tossing an egg at it or by Ground Pounding it.
In Yoshi's Island series[]
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[]
Kaboombas first appear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and later go on to appear in Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3. In these games, they can typically be found in caves and castles (in levels such as The Cave of the Mystery Maze and Raphael the Raven's Castle). In this game, they are often seen walking around and as soon as Yoshi gets close, they pause and fire a cannonball which explodes after a couple seconds. Kaboombas are immune to stomps due to their sturdy nature but can be beaten with eggs or Ground Pounds.
Yoshi's New Island[]
Kaboombas return as enemies, and they are typically encountered in castle levels such as Bowser's Castle Break-In. Just as before, they walk around and fire their cannonballs at Yoshi upon sight, once again they are tough enough to withstand a stomp but can still be beaten with egg tosses or Ground Pounds.
In Super Princess Peach[]
Kaboombas (under the name Cannon in this game) return as enemies. They retain their behaviors from before (once again walking naturally then launching cannonballs at Peach), Peach can easily beat a Kaboomba by whacking it with Perry or by using the Rage Vibe. If stomped on, the Kaboomba will flip over rendering it vulnerable allowing Peach to pick it up and toss it at other foes or objects. Kaboombas are first encountered in Shriek Mansion 3-8, and go on to appear in various levels in subsequent worlds. Kaboombas also have a Calm variant named Calm Cannon.
Trivia[]
- It is interesting to note that the name "Kaboomba" is a portmanteau of the words "Kaboom!" (onomatopoeia for an explosion) and Goomba. This portmanteau is ironic due to the Kaboombas' lack of similarities with Goombas, though, the name "Kaboomba" may just be a form of "Kaboom!". Also of note is that the Kaboomka Fireworks Factory was named in a similar style.
- In the Nintendo Official Player's guide for Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, an image of a Kaboomba's cannonball is shown on the enemy chapter rather than an actual Kaboomba.
