Jump Helmet is a Special Attack in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey.
Description[]
The Jump Helmet itself is a helmet resembling a Buzzy Shell, except orange and with a springboard on top depicting a red, five-pointed star. In its unused sprite for Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, it is a lighter orange and lacks the star design.
The attack starts when Luigi puts the Jump Helmet on his head. The player has to move Luigi left and right using the so that Mario can continue to land on the Jump Helmet while bouncing. The player can press the instant that Mario lands on the Jump Helmet to have him bounce higher. When the Mario Bros. are close enough to the enemies, Mario lands on the selected enemy, and the player has to press when Mario lands on his target to inflict lots of damage. Furthermore, the strength of the attack depends on how many times the player pressed when Mario landed on the trampoline, and how well Luigi lined up with his brother each time. The Jump Helmet attack inflicts the most damage if Mario jumps above the screen for the final jump, while somersaulting for every jump. If Mario does not land on the Jump Helmet while the move is being performed, the move fails.
In Mario & Luigi series[]
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story[]
Jump Helmet costs six SP to use. The player has to first unlock it by collecting all ten Flab Zone Attack Pieces.
The Jump Helmet is the sole focus of the Juuuuuump Mode in the Challenge Node, where jumping to the right of the helmet makes Mario jump farther and jumping to the left makes him jump higher.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[]
The Jump Helmet is an unused item, but its menu sprite is still in the game's files. It likely went unused because the Jump Helmet uses both screens if Mario jumps high enough while the game restricts the fight to the top screen. The attack was likely replaced by Jet-Board Bash.
Had it been used, the attack would have had Luigi move side to side as the Bros. advance on the enemy rather than forward and backward.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[]
The Jump Helmet functions the same as in the original game, but it costs 10 SP to use in Normal mode and 12 SP in Easy mode.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership[]
Luigi is able to use the Jump Helmet as one of his Special Attacks in this game. This version costs 9 Special Points to use and works just like it would have in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.
Flavor text[]
- Original: "Land on the helmet and jump with A! Dash to the landing spots with left and right on the plus control pad! Target: Single. Bonus effect: Nothing."
- Remake: "Land on the helmet and jump with A! Dash to the landing spots with left and right on the circle pad! Target: Single. Bonus effect: Nothing."
Trivia[]
- This attack is one of seven Special Attacks to not use the B button at all, with the other six being Bomb Derby (Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam), Luiginary Ball (Mario & Luigi: Dream Team), Luiginary Wall (Mario & Luigi: Dream Team), Cannonball Chuck (Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam), Toad Trail (Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam), and Trio Whirligig (Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam). Out of these, it is one of four to be a Bros. Attack, along with Bomb Derby, Cannonball Chuck, and Toad Trail. (The Luiginary Ball and Luiginary Wall are Luiginary Attacks, while the Trio Whirligig is a Trio Attack.) It's also the only Bros. Attack in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story with this trait.
- The opposite is true for the Thunder Bros. (unless the player unlocks the Advance Command) attack from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and the Slingsniper from Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, which use the B button but not the A button.
