Isabelle (しずえ Shizue?) is a dog from the Animal Crossing series who debuted in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. She assists the player in their new role as the town mayor as their secretary and assistant. She is also the twin sister of Digby, who works and stands at the front entrance to the Happy Home Showcase. In Mario-related media, Isabelle first appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, but within the Mario franchise itself, she first appears as a playable character introduced in the Animal Crossing x Mario Kart 8 downloadable pack of Mario Kart 8.
Profile[]
Physical description[]
Isabelle is a nearsighted, bright yellow Shih Tzu dog, which her Japanese name, Shizue, is a play on. Isabelle's head is also shaped like a bag of Bells, hence her English name. She has a happy appearance with rosy cheeks and with a white fur patch on her tail and around her mouth. She wears a green checkered vest with a white top and a red ribbon underneath with a navy blue skirt. During fall and winter, she wears a yellow cardigan, known as the Winter Outfit, instead of a vest. Her hair is tied up with a red elastic with bells attached, which actually jingle as she walks.
She wears different styled clothes on special events that are held around the town; for example, she will wear a flowery shirt during the Fireworks Show and a Santa-style shirt on Toy Day.
Personality[]
Isabelle is very clumsy and absentminded and dislikes confrontation. Despite this, she is respectful of others and is very friendly. Being open-minded and friendly, she is very keen to make the town a better place to live, by encouraging the player to do tasks and Public Works Projects throughout the town. Like many other secretaries, she can be hard on herself when she is side-tracked. Isabelle has shown sides of gratitude and affection to the player, especially on Valentine's Day and is even hinted on having a crush on the player regardless of gender.
In the Mario franchise[]
Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]
Isabelle appears in Mario Kart 8 as a DLC character part of the Animal Crossing x Mario Kart 8 alongside the Villager and Dry Bowser. Isabelle's signature vehicle is the City Tripper, which would go on to appear alongside Isabelle in later Animal Crossing games, in which the vehicle is named the Isabelle Scooter. Isabelle is a lightweight racer.
In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Isabelle is included within the base game.
Super Mario Maker[]
There are two unlockable Mystery Mushroom costumes of Isabelle, one of which shows her wearing a Summer Outfit while the other does so in a Winter Outfit. These can unlocked either at random by completing the Super Mario Challenge or by scanning a Summer Outfit or Winter Outfit amiibo of Isabelle, respectively. Unlocking Isabelle from the Super Mario Challenge is only possible on Normal difficulty or harder, and the bar is set even higher for Winter outfit Isabelle, as it requires Expert difficulty or higher.
In the Super Smash Bros. series[]
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[]
Isabelle is an Assist Trophy character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, replacing Mr. Resetti as the sole Animal Crossing Assist Trophy. Aside from this, both games also give Isabelle two other minor roles as a trophy and a Mii Fighter outfit released as downloadable content on June 14, 2015. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, there is a second trophy of Isabelle in her winter outfit. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Isabelle is an item in Smash Tour mode.
As an Assist Trophy, whenever Isabelle is summoned, she throws fruit at whoever summoned her, and the fruit heals the character upon contact. The fruit can also heal the other fighters, although they must pick it up first, just like the Food items in general. While active, Isabelle also expresses emotion depending on what occurs; if the fighter who summoned Isabelle gets KO'd, she leans over sadly until the fighter returns on stage, and if that fighter KO's an opponent, Isabelle cheers.
As an item in Smash Tour, Isabelle causes all nearby stat-boosting items to grow to maximum size.
The downloadable Mii Fighter outfit of Isabelle can be worn by the Mii Gunner while the headgear can be worn by any of the three Mii Fighters. If the Mii Fighter wears the Isabelle outfit, her gun is replaced with a party popper.
Prior to both games' release, Isabelle's appearance was originally confirmed on March 4, 2014. She was shown again in the Nintendo Direct on the 8th of April. Later on, she was confirmed that she will help the fighter who summoned her by throwing fruit towards them that can be 'eaten', lowering their percentage but fighters cannot interact with her.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
Isabelle appears as a playable fighter, and her fighter number is 68. The Mii Costume of Isabelle returns from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. Like most other fighters, Isabelle has to be unlocked first, which is doable by either winning against her Puppet Fighter in Adventure Mode: World of Light or sometimes by completing Classic Mode as Pikachu, upon which he is taken to fight Isabelle at Town and City.
There is a Fighter Spirit of Isabelle, obtained by completing Isabelle's Classic Mode route, titled Best in Show, which only consists of fighting female opponents (the only exception being Popo of the Ice Climbers, who fights alongside Nana, a female). The fifth round specifically involves Isabelle fighting the female Mario fighters at Princess Peach's Castle, including Princess Peach, Rosalina & Luma, Princess Daisy, and Wendy O. Koopa.
Prior to the game's release, Isabelle was confirmed to be a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on September 13, 2018. In her reveal trailer, "All In A Day's Work," she is seen working around the mayor's office while the mayor is out camping and fighting in Smash. She then gets a letter from Pete and is shocked when it ends up being an invitation for Smash. Her trailer ends asking for the viewers to cheer her on.
Special moves[]
Isabelle's special moves consist of:
- Neutral special: Pocket
- Side special: Fishing Rod
- Up special: Balloon Trip
- Down special: Lloid Trap
- Final Smash: Dream Town Hall

In Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[]
Scanning an Isabelle amiibo unlocks a pattern for the Yoshis based on Isabelle's design. The pattern is based on either Isabelle's Summer Outfit or Winter Outfit, depending on which type of amiibo is scanned.
In WarioWare Gold[]
Isabelle makes a cameo appearance in the Wario's amiibo Sketch mode if the player scans an Isabelle amiibo, upon which Wario does a crude drawing of Isabelle's smiling face.
