The Icead is an ice-elemental variant of Magmad in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. They resemble a blue mound and have yellow eyes.

Behaviour[]

Like their fiery counterparts, Iceads can be found on Mount Pajamaja. Their behaviour in the field is similar to that of a Magmad; getting too close to an Icead will cause them to engulf themselves in sheer cold and chase after the Bros. Eventually, the creatures will become vulnerable to an ambush as their sheer cold wears off.

Both species fight together in tandem. The Iceads have the same attacks that their fiery counterparts do, but their attacks cannot inflict Burn. Additionally, due to their ice element, they take more damage from the Fire Flower Special Attack.

While the Mario brothers can stomp the Iceads properly and safely, Magmads cannot be stomped on.

The Icead is a Level 18 monster that has 125 hit points, an attack power of 137, a defense of 98, and a speed of 70, giving 50 Experience and dropping 20 Coins along with a Super Candy in 1 out of 20 drops and a Secret Box in 1 out of 100 drops.

Variants[]

A spiked variant of Icead can be found in Mario & Luigi: Brothership. This version, like the Magmad, which returns in the same game, cannot be jumped on safely. It can be found on Heatfreeze Island and Slippenglide Island. These spiked Iceads whack their target with their head spike; this can be blocked with a hammer strike. They can also use a strafing cold breath attack which must be jumped over. If there is more than one, two of these spiked Iceads can bounce a snowball between themselves; this must be blocked with a hammer strike. A Glohm-contaminated variant can be found haunting Slippenglide. This version has the ability to duplicate itself and shuffle among the fakes. When Reclusa hijacks Concordia, this "Glohm Icead" can also be found haunting Heatfreeze Island. The Pipegunk can take on a form similar to this type of Icead if it is exposed to cold air.

Statistics[]

The Heatfreeze Island version is of Level 21, with 141 hit points, an attack power of 83, a defense of 88, and a speed of 69, and gives 143 Experience, 40 coins, and possibly a Super Mushroom, Ultra Mushroom, and/or Heatfreeze Ore upon defeat. The Slippenglide Island version is of Level 23 at first with 162 hit points, giving 115 Experience and 29 coins upon defeat, but it gets bumped up to Level 24 with 175 hit points, giving 127 Experience and 31 coins upon defeat.

Glohm Iceads are Level 23 on Slippenglide Island with 30 hit points and reward drops of 16 Experience and 43 Coins. On Heatfreeze Island after Reclusa goes on a rampage, their Level is bumped up to 40 with 734 hit points and reward drops of 1627 Experience and 242 Coins.

Behind the Scenes[]

Etymology[]

The Icead's name comes from a pun on "ice" (reflecting the creature's ice element) and "sad" (due to the apparent sad eyes face).

Nomenclature[]

In Japanese, Iceads were known as "Aisuns" (Aisun, written アイスン), derived from "ice." Their Chinese name, Róngbīng Guài (written 融冰怪), literally means "Melting Ice Monster." In Spanish, they are known as Gelus, which could either come from gélido ("icy") with the Latin suffix -us or was wripped straight from the Latin translation of "ice," which is gelus. In Portuguese, they are called "Gélidus," from gélido (icy) and the Latin suffix -us. Their Italian name, Ghiàccide, comes from ghiáccio ("ice") and the suffix -ide (which denotes that something pertains to another), which means that language literally calls them "Pertaining to Ice." Their French name, Givrus, comes from givre ("frost") with the Latin suffix -us. In German, they are called Frostirren (singular Frostirr; from English "frost" and Irrlicht ("will-o'-wisp"). Their Korean name, Aiseun (written 아이슨), comes straight from the Japanese name. In Russian, their name is Ledun (written Ледун), derived from lyod ("ice"; written лёд) and the Russian masculine noun ending -un (written -ун).
