The Ice Climbers are playable characters in Ice Climber and in the Super Smash Bros. series.
Profile[]
The Ice Climbers consist of the duo of Popo (who wears a blue coat) and Nana (who wears a pink coat). While their relationship has been hinted at before, it was never confirmed.
In WarioWare series[]
WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgames![]
In this game, Popo, the duo's leader, shows up in the microgame Ice Climber. He has to make his way to the top and grab the condor.
WarioWare: Twisted![]
Popo returns and has to smash the oncoming enemies with his hammer.
WarioWare Gold[]
Popo reappeared in WarioWare Gold in the microgame, Ice Climber. The player's objective is to grab onto the condor before time runs out. On the third level difficulty, he has to reach the eggplant before time runs out.
In Super Smash Bros. series[]
Super Smash Bros. Melee[]
The Ice Climbers made their debut appearance in the Super Smash Bros. series, after sixteen years of the release of their original game. They are a dual-controlled pair of fighters, making them unique compared to the other fighters. They, as a singular entity, are one of the 14 default characters available from the start.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
The Ice Climbers yet again consist of the duo Popo and Nana. They still fight as a pair with Nana following along. With Nana, special moves are better than just being Popo. Both Ice Climbers can now hang on a ledge at the same time and their Down Special in the air is no longer an auto-freeze. The Ice Climbers' Final Smash consists of a large iceberg taking up a large portion of the screen. The iceberg can damage, and eventually freezes, enemies who come near it.
Role in The Subspace Emissary[]
The Ice Climbers were first seen climbing up a mountain together, possibly in pursuit of the Halberd or they were just climbing. When Meta Knight passed them going up the mountain, the Ice Climbers took it as a challenge and jumped up the mountain with Meta Knight. Once they reached the top, the Ice Climbers celebrated with their "victory" for getting up the mountain first, until they and Meta Knight found Lucario, who was looking for a fight with Meta Knight, so the Ice Climbers watch from the side nervously. After the fight, the winner revives the loser, to their relief, and the Halberd crashes the Great Fox into the mountain. Although Meta Knight and Lucario managed to board the Halberd, the Ice Climbers (ironically) are thrown back to the ground towards Marth, Lucas, the Pokémon Trainer, and Ike. After facing some more Subspace Army troopers (with help from Mario and Link's group), the Ice Climbers teamed up with the other heroes as they journeyed into Subspace but are turned into trophies by Tabuu. Ice Climbers are then revived by King Dedede, Luigi, Ness, and Kirby and help the other smashers defeat Tabuu and restore the World of Trophies to normal.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[]
The Ice Climbers do not return as playable characters for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, although they appear in both versions as a collectible trophy. According to Masahiro Sakurai, the Ice Climbers were fully functional in the Wii U version, but because the 3DS has a lack of hardware power, he was forced to cut the Ice Climbers from both versions so that they share the same roster because Sakurai did not want version-exclusive characters. Additionally, they were deemed as low-priority characters since it was very unlikely that the duo would have a new game in their series.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
The Ice Climbers return for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Unlike their previous appearances in the series, they are unlockable characters.
Trivia[]
- The Ice Climbers are the first duo characters in the Super Smash Bros. series.
- They are also the first playable character whose name starts with a vowel.
- The Ice Climbers were the only playable characters to be cut after appearing in multiple installments.
- Nana is the only female character to be cut in the series.
