Mario or Luigi can pick up an Ice Block and kick it on the ground so that it slides into enemies along the way, much like a Koopa Shell, although the difference with Ice Blocks is that they break upon hitting a wall. If Mario or Luigi hold on to an Ice Block for too long, it melts.

A Buster Beetle can pick up an Ice Block to then try and throw it at Mario or Luigi at a fast speed.

The terrain of World 6-3 is made up of ice blocks in larger and smaller sizes, some stacked atop one another.

Super Mario World[]

There are Ice Blocks in the Awesome level only. They are frozen platforms with the appearance of light-blue Rotating Blocks. The game is also the first appearance of Grab Blocks, which Ice Blocks have retroactively become a variation of, but Ice Blocks are not used like Grab Blocks in the game.

Super Mario 64[]

Ice Blocks appear in Snowman's Land, where triangular-shaped ones emerge from a hole and slide straight across a narrow, straightforward icy path before lastly disappearing upon reaching freezing water at the end. A larger Ice Block follows after every four Ice Blocks. Mario has to jump over the Ice Blocks to avoid being pushed into the freezing water.

Super Mario Sunshine[]

There are Ice Blocks in special stages, where they can be melted if sprayed by FLUDD's water. In Noki Bay, there is an Ice Block containing a 1-Up Mushroom in every episode except The Shell's Secret.

Super Mario 64 DS[]

As sliding obstacles, Ice Blocks retain their role in Snowman's Land in the original game.

The remake uniquely has certain Ice Blocks in Cool, Cool Mountain and Snowman's Land that can be melted by Yoshi's Fire Breath, similarly to the Yoshi's Island series, and it is required to collect the contents within. In Cool, Cool Mountain, one of the Red Coins during the mission Frosty Slide for 8 Red Coins is inside of an Ice Block. Snowman's Land now has a mission named Yoshi's Ice Sculpture in which Yoshi has to melt Ice Blocks to collect the Power Star.

Chief Chilly Challenge features a type of Ice Block that are indestructible moving platforms.

Ice Balls shot by Ice Mario can freeze most enemies upon contact.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

As slippery platforms, Ice Blocks appear in levels of the ice-themed World 4.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U[]

Ice Blocks are slippery platforms once more. There are also Frozen Coins that can be thawed by fireballs, similarly to the Ice Blocks in World 9-7 of New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS / Super Mario Maker 2[]

Ice Blocks are featured as platforms in every game style, but they cannot be picked up nor melted by fireballs.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder[]
