An Ice Block is a frozen block composed of ice. Ice Blocks make their first overall appearance in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and its western Mario conversion, Super Mario Bros. 2, in which they are slippery platforms. Super Mario Bros. 3 is the first appearance of Ice Blocks that can be thrown by either Mario or Luigi. These Ice Blocks have retroactively become the frozen variation of Grab Blocks, which only debuted in Super Mario World, but not alongside Ice Blocks.

Mario or Luigi can pick up an Ice Block and kick it on the ground so that it slides into enemies along the way, much like a Koopa Shell, although the difference with Ice Blocks is that they break upon hitting a wall. If Mario or Luigi hold on to an Ice Block for too long, it melts.

A Buster Beetle has the ability to pick up an Ice Block to then try and throw it at Mario or Luigi at a fast speed.
