- "I know I can be more... and so can IDLE... We can help lots of people. I just know we can..."
- —Ireen wishes to help out in reuniting Concordia's lands after Ten's battle in Mario & Luigi: Brothership
The IDLE gang is an allied group from Mario & Luigi: Brothership. They are four Concordian children who wish to help out in Mario, Luigi, Snoutlet, and Connie's mission to stitch Concordia back together. They are temporarily joined by Princess Peach, Starlow, and Dorrie after the reactivation of the Color-Full Sea's Great Lighthouse.
Profile[]
Physical Appearance[]
The IDLE Concordians look different, but their designs are stereotypical of Concordian humanoids, with faces resembling an electrical outlet. Each one has a yellow-orange band tied around a different part of his or her body.
Ireen, the leader, is a short, pink Concordian who wears a hot pink dress. Her band is worn as a hair bow, and she has reddish-pink eyes.
Dulles is a lanky green Concordian with dark green eyes who wears a green top and dark green trousers. His band is tied around the green antenna on his head.
Loog is a short blue Concordian with dark blue eyes who wears a blue tank top and dark blue trousers. His band is worn like a scarf.
Ellow is a large, stocky yellow Concordian with orange eyes who wears an orange top and brown trousers. His band is worn like a cape.
Personality[]
The IDLE gang is willing to help out, though their Japanese biography describes them as not being very good at it. However, their willingness to drive Technikki's rocket through a wall around the Great Lighthouse of Color-Full Sea to help Mario and Luigi storm it and their numerous scouting missions reveal that they are very brave. The four kids are also cooperative despite their occasional bickering (which mellows out later), and repeatedly insist that their name is "IDLE" with capital letters should one mistakenly claim that the group is "idle" without capitals.
Membership[]
The members of IDLE are individually named Ireen (leader), Dulles, Loog, and Ellow. The four members have bands around different parts of their body.
Temporary Members[]
Princess Peach, Starlow, and Dorrie join the team temporarily. Peach wears her band around her right arm, and Dorrie wears his around his neck. Starlow does not wear one, presumably due to her small size.
Behind the Scenes[]
Etymology[]
The name "IDLE" comes from the word "idle," which is ironic considering the quartet's drive to help out.
Nomenclature[]
The Entire Group[]
In the Japanese dub, the group is called the Lingering Groop (Guzuguzu Dan; written グズグズ団). Their Chinese name, Tuōlatuōla Tuán (拖拉拖拉团), is formed from a calque of the Japanese name. The Spanish dub calls them "The Slackers" (Los Remolones, which contains molón, a colloquialism for "cool"), and in Portuguese, their name, Estáticos, is translated as "Statics." Their Italian name, N.E.T.T.Y., is a pun on inetti (plural of inetto ("incapable," "inept")), while French translates their name as Les ZÉROS, which means "Zeroes" (the plural of a pejorative term meaning "someone of little importance"). In the German dub, they are known as Team WYRG, derived from würg ("choke"). Their Dutch name, Team G.A.A.P., comes from gaap (which refers to the act of yawning).
Individual Members[]
The individual members also take their names from the team's letters (or syllables, depending on the language).
Ireen[]
In the Japanese dub, Ireen is called Gumi, from the first syllable in Guzuguzu ("IDLE") with the Japanese female name ending -mi (written み) tacked onto the end. In Chinese, she is called Tuōmǐ (拖米), a calque of the Japanese name. The Spanish dub gives her the French masculine (ironically for Ireen name René (meaning "reborn"), from the first syllable in Remolones. Her Portuguese name is Esther, derived from the first syllable of Estáticos while being a proper name. Italian gives her the English name "Nelly," a diminutive of "Eleanor," while also coming from the first letter of the entire group's name. In French, she is called "Zeboce," which is a pun on "the boss" reflecting how she leads IDLE; the first letter of the name forms the Z in ZÉROS. In Dutch, Ireen is called "Gussie," her name coming from the first letter in G.A.A.P. (the group's full name). She has the name Wibke in German, from the first letter in WYRG.
