Template:Noncanon Hotel Mario is a puzzle game that was created by Philips Media for the CD-i. Philips Media had acquired the rights to produce Mario and The Legend of Zelda games after initial plans to make a CD-ROM add-on for the Super Nintendo fell through. Released in 1994 to little fanfare, the game did very poorly due to a lack of interest in the CD-i system. The games resulting from the license did not gain much success, with Hotel Mario being regarded as one of the worst Mario games.

Controversy

These Full Motion Videos, however, are frowned upon by the Mario community for containing what is considered to be some of the worst scripting, drawing, animation, and voice acting yet seen in a video game. And as mentioned, the gameplay was not up to series standards, to the point that the majority of the Mario community totally rejects Hotel Mario as canonical to the seiries, something made easier by the fact that these games had nothing to do with Nintendo. The cutscenes have become a staple of "Youtube Poop" viral videos, most notably Mario's "You know what they say, all toasters toast toast", Luigi's "I hope you made lotsa spaghetti", and Bowser's laugh, due to the surreal animation and lackluster voice acting used throughout the game. Thus, the voice acting was so poor that when Mario said the line "Nice to the princess to invite us over for a picnic, eh Luigi ?", "eh luigi ?" sounded like Mario was saying "gay Luigi ?", this line was also commonly used for Youtube Poops. The level "Larry's Cave", have sparked notice when in the first part of the cut-scene, a face appears in the entrance of the cave, which have been often joked as the face being Squidward, a character from SpongeBob.
