Hootie the Blue Fish

Hootie the Blue Fish is an enemy in the Yoshi's Island series. They are a variant of Jumping Piranha Plants, although have a few characteristics of a fish. Hooties first appear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and make a reappearance in Yoshi's New Island.

Behavior[]

Hooties always move along a set path, typically in pairs, although they always do so outside of pipes. If a Yoshi gets in a way of a Hootie, it puts the Yoshi in its mouth and chews on him for a few seconds, much like Wild Piranhas do. When a Hootie does this, Baby Mario appears in a bubble, triggering the Countdown Timer. Therefore, a Yoshi often has to wait for a Hootie to be out of the way before he can continue onward.

Etymology[]

The enemy is named after the rock band Hootie & the Blowfish.

Hooties are only encountered in Naval Piranha's Castle. They are invulnerable to most attacks, although tossing an egg at a Hootie stuns it for two seconds, but a POW Block can defeat it permanently.

Yoshi's New Island[]

Hooties act the same as in their debut appearance.
