Hoopsters are ladybug-like enemies featured in Super Mario Bros. 2 and its remake Super Mario Advance.

Physical description[]

Hoopsters have a red back with large pink spots, an entirely black face consisting only of two wide eyes, and ten black legs, five on each side, as well as white feet. In Super Mario Bros. 2 and the Super Mario All-Stars remake, the sprites for Hoopsters instead show their spots being black, similar to real-world ladybugs. For Super Mario Advance, a Hoopster's in-game appearance was changed to having a yellowish-brown body with red spots. Despite this, artwork designed specifically for Super Mario Advance shows Hoopsters having having their usual red body with pink spots.

In Super Mario Bros. 2[]

Hoopsters are mainly found on vines, but some are also on other climbable objects. They have a pattern of repeatedly climbing up and down one, and are encountered in as early as World 1-1. If the player's character either touches a Hoopster from the side or while below it, they take damage. If the character is on the same object as a Hoopster, it moves faster to target them. Like most other regular enemies, Hoopsters can be stood on, during which it moves at its normal pace, and standing on a Hoopster allows the player's character to more safely travel up climbable objects. However, a series of climbable objects each tend to have a Hoopster, so the player's character is often put at risk when going from one climbable object to the next.

A Hoopster can be defeated by either throwing a vegetable or another object at it, touching it while under the effect of a Starman, or by picking up and throwing the Hoopster at another enemy.

The end credits misspells Hoopster's name as Hoopstar. Although this mistake was retained in the Super Mario All-Stars remake, it was later fixed in international versions of Super Mario Advance.

In Super Mario Bros. 3[]

In both the Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 remakes, the king of Desert Land is shown to have been transformed into a Hoopster in particular. In the latter game, Hoopsters are encountered as enemies in the World-e level Rich with Ropes, using the same sprite as the king of Desert Land while he is transformed instead of reusing its design from Super Mario Advance.
