—Hermie III, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga/Bowser's Minions

Hermie III is a Sidestepper-like boss located in Gwarhar Lagoon in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its Nintendo 3DS remake Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions. He is a crab who has a conical shell that resembles a Christmas tree, bearing the appropriate decorations. Hermie III holds one of the Beanstar's shards in his possession, although defeating Hermie III forces him to cough it up.

Biography[]

He speaks improper English, pronouncing "s" as "th". When the Beanstar broke into four pieces, Hermie III found one and placed it at the top of his shell, which made three of his fans come to help him decorate it more. When Mario and Luigi came, the fans paid more attention to them, making Hermie III furious, although Hermie calms down after his defeat and is pleased when offered Spangle, a Starkiss rockstar who wanted to be a star, instead.

Hermie III can also be seen during the ending sequence where he is waving to the plane as Mario and Luigi head back to the Mushroom Kingdom.

Battle[]

Hermie III has three attacks. His basic attack is trying to pinch the Mario Bros. with his claws, which can be avoided by jumping. Damaging the claws prevents him from using his claw attack. He also spits out purple bubbles at Mario and Luigi. These bubbles must be countered with hammers or else the Bros. become poisoned. After the Mario Bros. hit Hermie III for a while, the boss will duck into his shell and heal during his turns. To get him out of his shell, attack with the Firebrand. In the Nintendo 3DS remake, he has an additional gimmick: if you avoid his pinching attack perfectly, Hermie III increases the speed at which the attack will move. Stomping his pincers will prevent him from using them.

After a long battle with Hermie III, he gives Mario and Luigi his piece of the Beanstar after Mario and Luigi tell him all about the situation. When Mario and Luigi bring him Spangle as a substitute to the Beanstar, Hermie III gives them the Soulful Bros. badge.

Behind the Scenes[]

Name[]

Hermie is named after hermit crabs, with the III in his name being on the roman numeral standing for "three," which sounds similar to to the word "tree," referencing the design of his shell being similar to a Christmas tree.

Nomenclature[]

In the Japanese version of the game, Hermie III is called "Yadofuru Sansei" (written やどふる さんせい in Hiragana and ヤドフル サンセイ in Katakana), which literally means "Yadolph III," with "Yadolph" being a pun on yadokari (Japanese for "hermit crab;" written やどかり (Hiragana script) or ヤドカリ (Katakana script)) and Adolph III. In Chinese, he is merely called "Christmas Crab III" (Shèngdàn Xiè Sānshì; written 圣诞蟹三世). In the French dub, he is called Crustassov III (with Crustassov being a pun on crustacé which means "crustacean," which crabs belong to) and the Russian name suffix "-ov." His German name, "Paguri," comes from the scientific name for hermit crabs, "paguridae." The Italian dub calls him "Grácchio III," which is a pun on gránchio (crab). In Italian, his name is Soralpeu Samse (written 소랄프 삼서 in the Hangul script, with Soralpeu coming from sorage, which means "hermit crab" and is written 소라거, and Adolph III. In Spanish, he is called Cigatrón III, with Cigatrón coming from cigala, which refers to a nephrops.

Trivia[]

  • Similar to Bowser from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Cortez from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and Francis from Super Paper Mario, Hermie III becomes friends after his battle.
  • Hermie III is the only boss in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga who can be easily defeated just with the use of Mario's Firebrand (which burns his shell) and Luigi's Thunderhand (which deals critical damage to him).
  • Due to the Christmas decorations on his shell and the appearance of Mario (wearing red and being a little chubby), Hermie III thought that Mario was Santa Claus. ("C-could you be... SANTA CLAUS!?")
  • Hermie III earned his name from the real-world hermit crabs, which he slightly resembles. The III is a reference to the Roman numeral III, and thus a pun on trees.
  • He resembles the Yadotsurī enemy from Tomato Adventure, a game that was also made by AlphaDream, although Hermie III is much larger.
