Hector the Reflector's Haunted House is the fourth level of World 2 in Yoshi's Island DS. It is the game's second castle and a Yellow Yoshi takes control in this level. This level takes place in a haunted castle filled with many traps and lava pools. The level is also home to some ghostly enemies such as Boo Guys, Ghost Piranhas, and Invisighouls. The boss in this level is Hector the Reflector a large Invisighoul who has been given the power of invisibility through Kamek's magic.
Walkthrough[]
Starting off at the Castle's entrance, advance to the right and collect the Coins along the path, beat the Boo Guy in your way or use him to obtain the Smiley Flower above, from here, continue hopping across the platforms collecting the Coins, one of the Coins on the final platform before the main floorings is a Red Coin so be sure to collect this one. Once you land on the flooring, watch out for the Donut Lifts as they're dangling above the lava so don't stand on them for too long, move to the right collect the Coins on the platforms above (Boo Guys spawn from the Pipe below so if you're low on eggs, you can slurp them up). A Ghost Piranha is also hovering above however these can be beaten with either an egg or a Boo Guy. Continue to the right and hit the Winged Cloud to form a bridge over the lava, jump onto the Donut Lifts to grab the Coins, each of the three Donut Lift sets have one Red Coin each totaling to three, watch out for the Ghost Piranhas as you cross the bridge and climb the stairs (they can be easily beaten with eggs, DK Dash Attacks, or by spitting a Boo Guy at them). After dropping down the stairs, smash the soft stone blockages to get under the stairs where three Red Coins, a Coin, and a Smiley Flower can be collected (just be careful to limit the time spent on the flooring under the stairs as the floor consists of Donut Lifts) once collected, advance to the right and enter the door.
In the next area, advance back to the right (there is an Arrow Wheel here but come back for it later) and be sure to hit the Winged Cloud above for some Stars, once done, enter the Pipe to the right. In this next room, you will find several chairs and vases that appear perfectly motionless but as you move along the corridor, several of them start floating in the air and will throw themselves at you (these furnitures are controlled by Invisighouls, they can be eaten for eggs however so they make a good egg supply), the room itself contains three upper niches each containing a Winged Cloud, the first one contains some Stars, the second one contains a Smiley Flower, and the third one contains a Key necessary for progressing through the level (if you fail to get all the Winged Clouds and run out of Invisighouls, leave the room and reenter, all the Invisighouls will respawn). Once all the items have been collected, exit through the Pipe you came in from.
Upon entering the large room again, advance to the left and jump on the Arrow Wheel (the Arrow Wheels are controlled by whichever direction the arrow is pointing in so you may need to hop off it to allow it to spin in your desired direction, they also bounce off walls rebounding their direction once they do). Guide the Arrow Wheel along the Coin path, there are three Red Coins in this trail, one your near the top, take the left path and get an additional three Red Coins here (totaling to six Red Coins in this area) and grab the Smiley Flower in the niche, (from here, you can also guide it much higher to where the top ledge is, there's a Stork Stop here, you can switch to Baby DK and exit through the door to reach the area with the Baby Coin). After this, guide the Arrow Wheel to the upper righthand corner where the platform is and hit the invisible Winged Cloud in the corner (as it contains Stars) and use the Key to unlock the door.
In this next area, advance to the right and tag the Middle Ring, then swallow the Boo Guy here and toss the egg at the Arrow Clouds to collect the Coins and two Red Coins here, once done, the egg should hit the Boo Guy on the upper platform (be sure the Boo Guy is not anywhere on the slope or the egg will miss it) and the hit Boo Guy will roll into the Winged Cloud netting you a 1-Up, after this is done, advance to the right and on the Flatbed Ferries (they start moving up and down when you stand on them so be sure not to slip into the lava amidst the moving Flatbed Ferries) above the Flatbed Ferries is a row of seven Coins with four of them being Red Coins, collect these and jump across the gap with the lava pit climb the stairs (but watch out for the Boo Guys and Ghost Piranhas as you do), from here, use the next set of Flatbed Ferries to reach the upper platform, climb the stairs and avoid or beat the Ghost Piranhas, once at the top, toss an egg at the niche above where some Coins and a Red Coin await (if you're out, just slurp a Boo Guy that emerges from the nearby Pipe. Next, tag the Stork Stop and switch to Baby Mario (if you haven't already) and drop down to the lower ledge and use Baby Mario's egg-throwing abilities to ricochet the egg off the wall so it hits the Arrow Cloud, the egg will follow the track of Arrow Clouds before finally hitting the Winged Cloud, a staircase will be formed allowing you to reach the upper floor, beat the low-flying Ghost Piranha here and use an egg or a Boo Guy to obtain the Smiley Flower above, once done, exit through the door to the left.
In the next room, advance to the right and up the platforms. Watch out for the chairs and vases here, they're controlled by Invisighouls and they will try to attack you so avoid or slurp them up for eggs because you're going to need them for the boss upahead, follow the path to the right and tag the Middle Ring, pick whichever baby suits you at the Stork Stop, and enter the Red Door.
BOSS BATTLE: Hector the Reflector[]
Upon entering the room, Hector the Reflector will show up, Kamek will then arrive and use his magic to make Hector invisible so as to only be seen in the mirror. The fight is divided by two screens, the top screen is where Yoshi's fight with Hector is and the bottom screen is the mirror, Hector is only visible in the mirror so you will need to check the mirror periodically to see where Hector is. Anyway, to beat Hector the Reflector, pelt him with eggs, Invisighouls also shown up in the fight armed with either chairs, vases, or tables to toss at you (these are also visible in the mirror), they can easily be swallowed to be turned into eggs if you're running low. Every time you hit Hector, he will shrink in size and also spit out a piece of furniture at one of the corners of the mirror breaking a bit of it off (for the fifth hit, he will hit the mirror's center), It's best to keep all eyes on Hector and come supplied with six eggs so that way, you can get Hector in a lock and conclusively shoot eggs at him each time he recovers. After six hits, Hector will shrink into nothingness and explode and the level is completed.
Baby Coin Location[]
Guide the Arrow Wheel to the highest flooring of the room, then switch to Baby DK at the Stork Stop here. From here, enter the door to the left and climb the chain and use either an egg or a DK Dash Attack to break open the soft stone blocking your way, once this is cleared, grab the Baby DK Coin here and exit either through the Flippers or through the door you came out from.
Enemies Encountered[]
Trivia[]
- This level marks the only instance in the game where the two screens are utilized in a way other than expanding the game's screen (in this case, displaying the room and the room's mirror).
- Despite being a ghost-themed level, Boos and Big Boos are nowhere to be seen in this level, instead, Invisighouls take their place.
