Hanging Piranha Plants are a variety of Piranha Plant first appearing in Super Mario Bros. 3, these Piranha Plants are seen hanging upside down from Pipes behaving similarly to a regular Piranha Plant. Hanging Piranha Plants can be a nuisance as they can block the paths of Mario/Luigi however they aren't that durable and can be beaten in the same ways.

Hanging Piranha Plants appear in Super Mario Bros. 3, in this game, they are commonly seen in levels featuring tunnels and behave the same as a regular Piranha Plant (only hanging upside down hence their name), Hanging Piranha Plants emerge from roofed Pipes and can briefly block Mario/Luigi's way forcing the plumbers to wait for the Hanging Piranha Plants to return to their Pipes before crossing, a Hanging Piranha Plant can't be beaten with regular attacks but can be beaten with the effects of a Fire Flower, Super Leaf, Tanooki Suit, Hammer Suit, or a Starman, they can also be beaten by tossing objects such as Shells at them. They are commonly found in Pipe Land but they are first seen in the Grass Land level World 1-5.
Trivia[]
- Piranha Plants that hang from Pipes can also be found in several subsequent Mario games such as those in the New Super Mario Bros. however it's unclear if those are considered Hanging Piranha Plants as well as they aren't named as such in-game.
- The Bungee Piranhas from Yoshi's Island DS could be a relative of the Hanging Piranha Plants due to their hanging nature but it is unknown.
