The Hammer Suit is a power-up featured in Super Mario Bros. 3. Touching it causes Mario or Luigi to turn into their Hammer form.
Description[]
The Hammer Suit allows Mario or Luigi to throw hammers capable of damaging even some of the tougher enemies, such as Boos, which cannot normally be attacked. The Hammer Suit is found either in big Question Blocks or as a possible item within a Mushroom House. If Mario or Luigi obtain a Hammer Suit within a level, the player earns 1,000 points. The Hammer Suit also provides protection against fireballs if Mario or Luigi crouch while one is thrown at them.
Unlike fireballs, the hammers thrown by Hammer Mario fly in a parabolic arc, which can result in less precise aiming. Mario or Luigi cannot slide on slopes while wearing the Hammer Suit. Also, as with other power-ups, one hit from an enemy causes them to lose their power.
The Hammer Suit is one of the two power-ups in Super Mario Bros. 3 that can defeat Bowser without tricking him into falling through the floor, the second being the Fire Flower.
