Mario & Luigi

Grumbells are living dumbbell enemies which appear in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. They are encountered in Mount Pajamaja. In combat, Grumbells may be assisted by Monolifts (except Block Monolifts due to them being exclusive to the Mammoshka's battle where Grumbells are absent).

Description[]

Grumbells resemble ordinary dumbbells or barbells, but with two eyes akin to the Dream Stone's spirit on their "handle." These eyes may vanish during a few of the Grumbell's attacks.

Behaviour[]

Field[]

Grumbells hover at high altitudes in the field, wandering aimlessly in their territory. If the Mario Bros. encroach on the creature's territory, though, the Grumbell will hover above the Bros. and slam down on them.

Combat[]

Grumbells are immune to ground-based moves due to their ability to fly, and have two attacks, one of which is their main attack and the other of which is used if a Grumbell is alone. In the former, the attacking Grumbell calls another over with the two performing an attack that involves them making a distinctive sound and falling down afterwards. In the latter attack, Grumbells float above their target and retract their eyes, rotate, then perform a slam attack; if the Grumbell finishes its rotation in a position that is not its "neutral" position, it will right itself right before smashing into its target. Both attacks must be countered with Hammer strikes.

Any Monolifts present in combat may drop their rock stacks if Grumbells are present. If the Monolift does this, the Grumbells will drop to the floor with their eyes vanishing and the Monolift uses fallen Grumbell to weightlift. The Monolift also twitch its eyes during the weightlifting, dictating which Bro. it plans to attack; if the left eye is bigger, Luigi is the target; if the right eye is bigger, it will target Mario. After several weightlifts, the Monolift will throw its Grumbell at the target, who must jump over the oncoming Grumbell. If the Bros. dodge the attack, the Grumbells will smash into the Monolift that threw them, taking 14 points of damage and dealing 10 points of damage to the Monolift.

Grumbells are Level 18 monsters that have a health maximum of 88, with their Attack Power, Defense, and Speed being 100, 127, and 75, respectively. When killed, they give 90 Experience and 24 Coins, and have a 1 in 20 chance to drop a Refreshing Herb and a 1 in 50 chance to drop the POW Gloves.

Behind the Scenes[]

Etymology[]

Grumbells are named after dumbells, which their design is taken from (if not barbells).

Nomenclature[]

In Japanese, Grumbells are called Arearei (written アレアレイ), from arei ("dumbbell"; written 唖鈴 in Kanji, あれい in Hiragana, and アレイ in Katakana). Their Spanish name, Mancuerni, comes from mancuerna ("dumbbell"). Portuguese calls them halterolhos (from haltere ("dumbbell") and olho ("eye"). In Italian, their name is Manúbrio ("handlebar"). French calls them Hélicalter, from hélicoptère ("helicopter") and haltère ("dumbbell"). Their German name, Flugtel, comes from flug ("flight") and hantel ("dumbbell"). In Russian, they are called Gantelet (written Гантелет), from gantelya ("dumbbell", written гантеля) and the Russian suffix -let (written -лет) which is used to denote something that flies.
