"Hmm. The thing about Bonds is... they're not reserved just for the kindhearted. there's people you hate, yeah? Folks you think are bad news? (Connie: Well... I...) Like... someone you're always butting heads with. They say up, you say down. Even those folks have friends and allies. Those count as Bonds too."
—The Great Conductor mentions how even your foes can have Bonds in Mario & Luigi: Brothership

The Great Conductor is a supporting character from Mario & Luigi: Brothership. He is the guardian of Concordia, simultaneously serving as Snoutlet's advisor.

Profile[]

Physical Description[]

The Great Conductor is a massive pig-like creature. He resembles Snoutlet, with a yellow face holding his eyes resembling a two-pronged outlet and stubby limbs and wings and a green extension cable around him. In the icon for the Conductor Connector Special Attack, his size is reduced, although this could just be a plushie in his image.

Personality[]

Fitting his reputation as Concordia's guardian deity, the Great Conductor is portrayed as wise, serving as Snoutlet's mentor. Despite his wisdom, however, the reason for Cozette's perceived betrayal manages to escape him. This, however, leads to his assumption that someone else is pulling the strings (which turns out to be proven correct when Zokket meets his demise and Reclusa awakens). Additionally, in a contradiction to his power, the Great Conductor seemingly fears Zokket's power, hiding on Conductor Island to avoid being spotted and targeted by the fiend.

History[]

At the very start of the game, the Great Conductor brings Mario and Luigi to Concordia by summoning a warp portal above the Mushroom Kingdom as Zokket and his army wreak havoc throughout Concordia. However, the Great Conductor is not seen. He also gives Luigi the Luigi Logic skill.

Later, after Mario and Luigi defeat Bowser at Zokket's fortress during their assault on it and escape the Glohm wave that he summons in response in the hopes that they would die, the Great Conductor tells the Bros. to jump.

Mario and Luigi later arrive at Conductor Island, where they and Snoutlet encounter the Great Conductor himself. The Great Conductor reveals that Concordia's lands being ripped part was because Cozette, the former Wattanist, for some reason betrayed Concordia despite the fact that she swore loyalty beforehand and showed no signs of a desire to betray it, with his best guest being that someone else is responsible. Afterwards, the Great Conductor puts the Bros.' bond to the test. After the Bros. pass his test, the Great Conductor allows access to the lighthouse of Conductor Island.

The Great Conductor makes an appearance during the endgame, where the Bros. go back to his home on Conductor Island for advice after their Bonds prove too weak breaking through the barrier around Reclusa's fortress, and the Great Conductor reveals that even their enemies can have Bonds with each other, hinting at the Extension Corps's Bond.

After the Bros. defeat Reclusa and restore Concordia, the Great Conductor summons another portal back to the Mushroom Kingdom, which they, and Princess Peach, Bowser, and their subjects take.

The Great Conductor is also used for the Conductor Connector Special Attack, where the Extension Cord he wears as a belt is connected to satellites that he draws power from. Afterward, the Great Conductor fires a laser from his rear at the targeted enemy. The player has to help him fire at the right time by pressing the X button when the crosshairs line up.

Combat[]

The Great Conductor is a unique boss, since he has a hidden health bar, and Battle Plugs cannot be used. In combat, he has four attacks:

  • In the first one, the Great Conductor abducts a brother, trapping him in a cup; this one cannot be avoided, but the Great Conductor can only trap one Bro. at a time. The uncaptured Bro. can free his partner by destroying the cup containing the captive, but the Great Conductor will include fakes. The cup containing the real captive will have him performing an animation properly, with the fakes' cups displaying incorrect animations.
  • The next two attacks are used when the Great Conductor has a Bro. captured:
    • In one, the cups charge at the freed Bro. who must jump over them. The Great Conductor follows afterward and must be avoided.
    • In another, the Great Conductor will smash the free Bro. beneath his rear; this must be countered with a hammer strike. The cups will get close to the target, giving him ample time to smash them and deal damage.
  • The last attack involves the Great Conductor zapping Mario and Luigi with a thunderbolt. This is extremely powerful and cannot be avoided conventionally, and can pierce the Emergency Guard. To stop it, Mario and Luigi have to hit the Great Conductor with different Special Attacks and get an Excellent!! on each one; getting a Great! or worse will cause the attack to be voided, and an attack cannot be used more than once.

To defeat the Great Conductor, the Bros. have to hit him with enough Bros. Attacks and get an Excellent!! rating on each one, switching between Bros. Attacks. When the player uses either the 3D Green Shell or Flash Clock, the Great Conductor will lower his body. Each Excellent!! rating spurs a unique comment:

  • For the 3D Red Shell, the Great Conductor says, "I enjoyed the way you built up power and kicked that shell."
  • For the Hatch Me if You Can, his line is this: "The way you kept that egg volley going was cool."
  • For the Bomb Derby, he says, "Pleasing that you turst each other enough to hit bombs with hammers."
  • For the Flash Clock, he will say this line: "Your footwork on that one with all the fast hammering was impressive."
  • The 3D Green Shell triggers this line: "Your passing technique with that shell showed a high degree of skill."
  • Getting an Excellent!! with the Thunder Dynamo yields: "You were very much in sync as you pumed that handle repeatedly."
  • With the Jump Helmet, the Great Conductor will say "Your shared trust for that high-jumping attack was heartwarming."
  • The Yoo Who Cannon triggers the line, "You kept track of where each Bro. was and in what order they appeared."

After he says these lines, the Great Conductor follows up with this same line: "This was a good Bros. Attack."

The Great Conductor himself is a Level 36 monster with 3600 hit points, an attack power of 173, a defense of 138, and a speed of 133, giving 9500 Experience and 996 Coins and the Auto Luigi Battle Plug when defeated. His cups have 366 hit points with the same attack power, defense, and speed stats, but have no experience rewards or loot drops.
