Goombules are a sub-species of Goomba as an organism Goomba reigning inside of Bowser's body in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey.

Profile[]

Goombules resemble Goombas, but have a dark pink egg-yolk shaped body with an orange nucleus in the center. They also have black eyes and yellow pupils.

History[]

These enemies are found in the Trash Pit and in the Pump Works. In the field, Goombules wander around, but encroaching upon their territory causes them to aggressively charge the intruder.

Combat[]

These enemies can be attacked by being jumped on, hammers, or by special attacks. They are also known to be the weakest enemies in the game. Goombules have two attacks, which involve them either ramming or rolling into their target. When they attack, they run to the bro. they want to attack if they ram into them. If they use their rolling attack, they point their foot in the direction, depending on which bro. they are going to attack, and then roll at them. Both of their attacks can be countered via jumping.

When Mario and Luigi gain a new Special Attack, Goombules are the enemies shown in the demo to be attacked, and if the player scores an Excellent! rating, the Goombules will often all be destroyed. When they are defeated, Goombules may drop a Mushroom or Syrup.

They also have a sub-species called an Elite Goombule that can only be harmed by the Green Shell.

Stats[]

Goombules are monsters of Level 1 that have 8 hit points (12 with the Challenge Medal), an attack power of 14 (35 with the Challenge Medal), a defense of 13 (20 with the Challenge Medal), and a speed of 12 (18 with the Challenge Medal). When slain, they give 3 Experience Points and drop 2 (3 with the Challenge Medal) Coins along with a Mushroom (1 in 4 drops) and/or a Syrup Jar (3 in 10 drops). They have regular reactions to contracting Status Effects.

Trivia[]

  • Goombules have a similar rolling attack to the Gromba in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. Incidentally, they can be found in the game's files, indicating they were going to appear at one point. Had the Goombules been incorporated into Dream Team, they most likely would have been found in Neo Bowser Castle's Dream World.

Behind the Scenes[]

Goombules take their designs from cells, with the yellow yolk-like object that seems to be their "heart" being based on a cell's nucleus.

Etymology[]

Their name is a portamanteau on "Goomba" and "globule."

Nomenclature[]

In Japanese, Goombles are called "Saibō" (written 細胞; さいぼ in Hiragana and サイボ in Katakana), meaning "cell," though the final - could reference their mushroom-themed counterparts outside Bowser's body called Goombas. The Spanish dub calls them "Goomocito," a portmanteau of English "Goomba" and Spanish Linfocito ("Lymphocite"). In Italian, the enemy is called Goómbulo, a calque of the English name based on the word glóbulo ("globule"). Their French name, Goombaryote, comes from "Goomba" uerged with the "-karyote" suffix (meaning "equipped with kernel" in Greek) in "Prokaryote" and "Eukaryote." In German, they are called "Cell Goombas" (Zell-Gumba). Korean translates their name as Sepoba (written 세포바), from sepo ("cell"; written 세포) and a Korean transliteration of English "Goomba" (굼바).
