Goomboss, also known as the Goomba King, is a recurring boss in the Mario series. He is a giant, kinglike Goomba who was first seen in Paper Mario as on of the first bosses Mario and his goomba counterpart, Goombario fight. He later reprises his role as a boss in the games Super Mario 64 DS and Mario Kart DS. He has serious eye problems, as his eyes are always spinning around and around.

Appearances

Goomboss doesn't show up all too often, but when he does, it is usually a bit of a shorter, easier battle.

Paper Mario

Goomboss, actually referred to as "Goomba King" in this particular game, is seen with his two minions, a Red and Blue Goomba, at his fortress at Goomba Road. To defeat him, you can attcack him directly, or hitting the tree in the background to make to make chestnuts fall on him and his minions, doing three damage. By combining Mario and Goombario's attacks, Goomba King can be easily defeated, at which time he will hide in his fortress.

Goomba King and his minions are defeated, Kammy Koopa is secretly observing the battle. She reports back to Bowser, who is furious at the defeat.

In the ending parade of Paper Mario, Red and Blue Goomba are trying to get the Goomba King out of a tree. He then falls out, and dizzily wobbles off the screen, followed by the Goomba Bros.

Who cares if he's strong? You're much stronger. Gee, I wonder what he ate to become so big? I'd like to be a bit bigger, too.

Super Mario 64 DS

He also appeared in Super Mario 64 DS, now under the name of Goomboss To get to him, you will need to get 8 stars and jump into the painting in the rec room with Mario's face on it. After completing the short stage, Yoshi will encounter Goomboss. Goomboss will produce a small army of Goombas, and you must get behind him and his army while avoiding the poison pool in the middle. Yoshi has to defeat him by eating the Goombas with his tongue and spitting them back at him. Once defeated, Yoshi wins back Mario's key to use him in the game.

When fighting him for the second time playing as Mario, Luigi, or Wario, you have to punch a Goomba into his back 3 times.

He, like the other bosses that must be fought in order to access to characters, gives unique dialouge to Mario, the one he trapped, specifically.

Mario Kart DS

Goomboss is a boss in Mission Mode. to beat him, basically get as many Super Mushrooms as you can while avoiding the Goombas. It's a pretty simple race, though he increases speed with each lap.

Possible Etymology

Goomboss is an obvious portmanteau of goomba (the enemy which it resembles) and boss (a videogaming word for a difficult-to-defeat end-of-the-level character). Now, whether goomba comes from the Sicilian word gumba (pronounced the same as Goomba) is debatable.
