He also appears in Super Mario 64 DS, now under the name of Goomboss. To get to him, Yoshi needs to get 8 stars and jump into the painting in the rec room with Mario's face on it. After completing the short stage, Yoshi will encounter Goomboss. Goomboss will produce a small army of Goombas, and you must get behind him and his army while avoiding the poison pool in the middle. Yoshi has to defeat him by eating the Goombas with his tongue and spitting them back at him. Once defeated, Yoshi wins back Mario's key to use him in the game.

First, Rocket Start to catch up to him and snake closely to the turn, and Toad will be ahead of him, but he will quickly catch up, so do not let him trample Toad. He will be in front of Toad, so tightly snake around the corner, then when he gets to the finish line he will stop (giving you some time), grow bigger, and move faster, throughout this lap Toad should be in front of him. Again he will stop, grow even bigger, move even faster, but this time he will cheat and step over the middle and gain on Toad. Snake closely around each corner, and get any Super Mushrooms he may have dropped, it will be close but if done correctly Toad will win and get three stars.

—Goomboss in Super Mario 64 DS

Goomboss, also known as King Goomba or the Goomba King, is a recurring boss in the Mario series. He is a giant, king-like Goomba who was first seen in Paper Mario as one of the first bosses Mario and his Goomba counterpart, Goombario fight. He later reprises his role as a boss in the games Super Mario 64 DS and Mario Kart DS. He has serious eye problems, as his eyes are always spinning around and around.

Possible Etymology

Goomboss is an obvious portmanteau of Goomba (the enemy which it resembles) and boss (a video-gaming word for a difficult-to-defeat end-of-the-level character). Now, whether Goomba comes from the Sicilian word gumba (pronounced the same as Goomba) is debatable.

Trivia

 • Goomboss does not physically appear in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, but he is mentioned in the Super Luigi books. However, the English translation referred to the character as the "Chestnut King".
 • Goomboss is one of the few Paper Mario exclusive characters to make an appearance in a main series Mario game.
