Gold Flags are achievements that appear in Super Mario 3D Land and return in Super Mario 3D World and its updated port Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury.

In Super Mario 3D Land[]

If Mario jump to the very top of a Goal Pole or a Big Goal Pole at the end of a level, the player receives a 1-Up like it had in all previous games. When the flag rises on the flagpole, it will then turn gold once it reaches the top.

Getting Gold Flags in all levels is required to unlock the 96th and final level of Special 8, Special 8-Crown, as the level is locked behind getting 5 Stars on a save file, and getting all Gold Flags rewards you a star on your save file.

In Super Mario 3D World[]

If either Mario or his friends jump to the very top of a Goal Pole or a Big Goal Pole at the end of a level, the player(s) receives 10,000 points. When the flag rises on the Goal Pole, it will then turn gold once it reaches the top. The Gold Flag goes to the player who reaches the top first, which is shown on the overworld map. Replaying the levels can change the ownership of the Gold Flag to whoever gets a Gold Flag on the replay.

The Super Bell can help with obtaining Gold Flags, as the Cat forms allow the wearer to climb up the Goal Pole. However, much as the Cat forms have a limited time on climbing, they can only climb on the pole for so long before setting down, so they cannot salvage every botched jump.

While Mystery Houses and Captain Toad Courses automatically give a Gold Flag upon completion, they do not contribute to the total Gold Flag count.

To unlock the twelfth and final World, World Crown, one must collect all three main collectibles of the game from the past eleven Worlds, with 81 Gold Flags being needed to help unlock World Crown.
