Donkey Kong Mario vs
Not to be confused with Red Girders, a specific type of Girder in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series.

Girders are construction platforms that first appear in the original Donkey Kong arcade game. They have since appeared in a variety of Donkey Kong and Mario games, but it was not until Super Mario Odyssey when they first appeared in a Mario game.

Description[]

Girders are generally a type of Semisolid Platform, like in the original Donkey Kong. They are most commonly depicted red, like in 25m and 75m of the original Donkey Kong game, although Mario vs. Donkey Kong games since Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem depict them as gray. Most appearances of girders have been a reference to the original Donkey Kong game, particularly 25m, in both Mario-related media and popular culture in general. Sometimes, the red girders contribute to the aesthetic of Donkey Kong.

Donkey Kong 25m

Girders as they appear in 25m in the arcade version

Girders appear in every stage, most notably in 25m, where they are the only type of platform. Mario uses girders to walk across.

At first, in the opening of 25m in the arcade version, the girders are horizontal, but when Donkey Kong reaches the top, he jumps a few times until reaching the left, causing each platform below him to become slightly askew, one after the other. There are ladders connected between the girders.

Donkey Kong (Game Boy)[]

Girders appear in every returning stage from Donkey Kong, including some later construction-themed areas, such as in Big-City.

Donkey Kong 64[]

Girders appear in the port of the original Donkey Kong arcade game, having no difference in role from the original game.

In the game's instruction booklet, Cranky Kong mentions that he hopes a 2D level design he submitted, the "Great Girder Grapple," made it into the game as a secret level after three minutes of planning.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong series[]

Girders are used as platforms in every Mario vs. Donkey Kong title.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again![]

In Floor 1 Donkey Kong, whenever Donkey Kong slams his fists, pieces of red-colored girders are among the objects that fall from the upper part of the screen. If a girder hits a Mini, the player loses that Mini.

In Mario franchise[]

Super Mario Odyssey[]

Girders are common platforms throughout the Metro Kingdom. Items such as Coins and Power Moons can be found inside some of the girders.

Crossover appearance[]

Super Smash Bros. series[]

Girders are used as platforms in the 75m stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, also returning in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The entire stage and the placement of the girders are a homage to 75m from the original Donkey Kong game.
