Giant Spike Pillars are larger variations of Spike Pillars appearing in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, they behave identically to Spike Pillars but their much larger and as a result, take up more platforms making them far more hazardous. Giant Spiked Pillars also all emerge from their holes at all the same speeds unlike their smaller counterparts which emerge at varying speeds. They usually poke out briefly acting as a warning before they dart towards the ceiling and then there's a five-second delay before they retract. Giant Spike Pillars can only dart to a certain length before stopping, they can also be stopped by walls/ceilings/floors or other Giant Spike Pillars. Obviously, Giant Spike Pillars cannot be destroyed but if one is under the effects of a Starman, he/she could avoid damage from the Giant Spike Pillar.

History[]

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

Giant Spike Pillar Castle

Two Giant Spike Pillar retracting as The Mario Crew wait until it's safe to progress.

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Giant Spike Pillars make two appearances, they are first seen in World 6-Tower, during the level, there is a Giant Spike Pillar constantly emerging from it's hole in the inaccessible pit below, during this time the heroes must seek cover on the side alcoves as the Giant Spike Pillar is so large, it takes up virtually most of the area. They must also use precise timing and try to keep making progress throughout the level. The Giant Spike Pillar stops at the level's midway point where it comes into contact with another Giant Spike Pillar, after the midway point is passed, the Giant Spiked Pillar coming from above is the one you'll need to worry about, just as before, seek cover on the alcoves on the sides when it comes down however this time, it should be more difficult as you will need to use the Cannon Pipes to progress higher at points as well as maneuvering on the moving platforms, additionally, the level's final Star Coin is in the way of the Giant Spike Pillar's path but if your movements are timed well enough, obtaining it shouldn't be too bad. Giant Spike Pillars are also later seen in World 7-Castle, where they play a similar role to how they did previously however this time, they are a hazard found all over the level (alongside the smaller Spike Pillars) rather than being the level's central hazard as before. When they emerge from their holes, they take up many of the platforms requiring the heroes to wait for them to retract before moving or take damage. The Giant Spike Pillars are also seen in large numbers in a secret room containing the level's second Star Coin.
