Ghosts are a recurring species in the Luigi's Mansion series. They first appear in Luigi's Mansion, and each installment of the series introduces a different group of ghosts. Ghosts have appeared in various other Mario spinoffs, typically in a Luigi's Mansion-themed location.
In Luigi's Mansion series[]
Luigi's Mansion[]
Ghosts are encountered in nearly every room of the mansion. There are also Portrait Ghosts, which are stronger than regular ghosts, and they had originally been captured by E. Gadd but later freed by King Boo. Gold Ghosts are the most common and basic type of ghost encountered.
Luigi first fights ghosts is in the Training Room, where he has to try and vacuum up the Gold Ghosts while being trained by E. Gadd to use his flashlight and Poltergust 3000. Ghosts generally appear from behind Luigi. If Luigi vacuums up more than one ghost at a time, he earns a heart,
In The Artist's Studio, Vincent Van Gore paints various ghosts to life to fight Luigi. This is the last room in which regular ghosts are fought.
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon[]
Set in Evershade Valley, Luigi encounters different ghosts here than in Luigi's Mansion. At first, the ghosts are friendly, which is because of the Dark Moon, and assist E. Gadd on his paranormal research. When King Boo destroys the Dark Moon, the ghosts betray E. Gadd and instead serve under King Boo's command. Luigi now has to capture ghosts in five different mansions, and just as before King Boo is the final boss.
In the end, Luigi manages to restore the Dark Moon, turning the ghosts friendly again.
Luigi's Mansion 3[]
Taking place in The Last Resort, the game features different ghosts again, serving now as both Hellen Gravely's and King Boo's minions.
The ghosts and King Boo were originally imprisoned by E. Gadd, being a part of his collection, before Hellen tricked E. Gadd into visiting The Last Resort, where she traps E. Gadd and frees the ghosts and King Boo. When Luigi, Mario, Princess Peach, and three Toads arrive, the ghosts all disguise themselves as regular employees, but when every one of them gets captured except Luigi, the ghosts stop using their disguises. Luigi and his green goo lookalike, Gooigi, go on a journey to recapture every ghost.
In the ending, after The Last Resort had been destroyed, the ghosts were about to attack Luigi, but turn good as a result of King Boo's gem vanishing, a similar situation to the Dark Moon scenario in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. However, the ghosts are distraught over The Last Resort being destroyed. E. Gadd offered to help them rebuild, and once the repairs are done, the ghosts, along with E. Gadd and Gooigi, can be seen waving goodbye to Luigi, Mario, Peach, and the Toads as the group leaves.
In Mario Power Tennis[]
Various ghosts from the first Luigi's Mansion are gimmicks on the Luigi's Mansion Court. The Terror Tennis minigame takes place here, and involves trying to prevent the ghosts from escaping their portrait. Unlike Luigi's Mansion, regular ghosts are featured in the portraits instead of Portrait Ghosts.

In WarioWare: Get It Together![]
A few ghosts appear in the microgame Luigi's Mansion, in which the player's character has to find a Gold Ghost and a Purple Puncher, the latter only being in Level 3. In two-player mode, a Blue Twirler appears in Level 3 as well.
Crossover appearances[]
Super Smash Bros. series[]
A group of ghosts from Luigi's Mansion are featured as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, while a group of ghosts from Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon appear as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.
