Garlic is a type of root vegetable and a favorite food of Wario's. Garlic makes its first appearance in Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, and has gone on to appear in several other Wario games as well as some of Wario's appearances in Mario spinoffs.
Description[]
Garlic serves as either a health-restoring item or a power-up item that changes Wario into Wario-Man, depending on the appearance.
In Wario Land series[]
Wario Land 3[]
Garlic represents the Super Smash treasure that Wario has to collect in the Tower of Revival. Upon collecting Super Smash, Wario gains the ability to break solid blocks. In Forest of Fear, several heads of garlic can be seen hanging from some platforms, and if Wario touches one of them while in his Vampire form, he reverts to normal.
Wario Land: Shake It![]
Garlic restores a heart in Wario's life meter. If Wario shakes an enemy, it sometimes drops a head of garlic, which bounces along the ground until Wario obtains it. There is larger Garlic that restores three hearts, and it is dropped by enemies such as white Bandineros.
In Wario World[]
Garlic returns as a health-restoring item. Wario receive a Garlic from a Garlic Dispenser by paying it a certain number of Coins, varying per course. Garlic can sometimes be found in wooden chests.
In WarioWare series[]
WarioWare: Touched![]
In the intro cutscene for Wario-Man's stage, Wario eats a "Nasty Garlic" to transform into Wario-Man.
WarioWare Gold[]
Garlic is featured in the minigame Wario Kard, in which it is spent after choosing a deck for each attempt against enemies. The player can have up to three garlic, which is the number they begin with. Upon using a garlic, it takes five minutes for it to refill. Once the player spends all of their garlic, they are given the choice of spending 500 coins to challenge an enemy while they wait for the next garlic to be refilled.
WarioWare: Get It Together![]
Garlic appears in two microgames, Flee the Flashlight and Garlic Catch. In Flee the Flashlight, the player's character has to steal garlic from Wario without being caught. In Garlic Catch, the character has to tilt a basket to collect some garlic heads falling from the sky.
In Mario Superstar Baseball[]
One of Wario's team names is Wario Garlics. In Wario's profile, garlic is said to be his favorite food, and it could possibly be the cause for his high stamina. A clove of garlic also appears during Wario's Star Skill, Phony Ball, in which it appears from the fake ball that is hit out to the field.
In Mario Kart series[]
Mario Kart Arcade GP / Mario Kart Arcade GP 2[]
Garlic is a recovery item, more specifically a Special Item of Wario's. Using Garlic removes all bad conditions from the kart, such as square tires, burst tires, or Thunder Cloud. For a split-second, the Garlic also provides a shield that, with precise timing, can block an incoming item or protect against a Time Bomb explosion. In Mario Kart Arcade GP, Garlic has an unlockable variation named Garlic+, which lengthens the duration in which the shield is active.
Mario Kart Tour / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]
Garlic makes cameo appearances throughout Ninja Hideaway, where it is displayed on banners and fences. Ninja Mansion's windows are also shaped like heads of garlic.
In Wario: Master of Disguise[]
Garlic is one of the five types of falling objects in the minigame Trash It, in which the garlic has to be dragged to the mouth. Garlic also appears in Trick Slider, as one of the possible images shown, and in Zappy Path, as one of the shapes the blue dot needs to be traced through.
In Mario Party 10[]
A head of garlic makes a cameo in the Wario Board, where it is on a table-like platform at the right side of the board.
In Mario Tennis Aces[]
Garlic is featured in Wario's Special Shot, the Glorious Garlic Bomber, in which he eats a head of garlic to strengthen himself.
In Mario Strikers: Battle League[]
Whenever Wario scores a goal, a cutscene is shown of him celebrating by eating a head of garlic.
Crossover appearances[]
Super Smash Bros. series[]
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, when activating his Final Smash, Wario eats a head of garlic to transform into Wario-Man for his Final Smash, a reference to WarioWare: Touched!.
Unused appearances[]
Wario Land 4[]
In beta versions, a garlic icon appears next to the Heart Gauge, suggesting that Garlic would have been used to restore Wario's health instead of hearts.
