Frozen Water (also called Frosted Water, Polar Water, or Penguin Water) is a deadly hazard found in Super Mario 64, Super Mario 64 DS, and a few other games. It is similar to Icy Water but the waters have been completely frozen and hardened to the point where they're actually hazardous. Touching Frozen Water is like touching Lava, it will cause iceburn causing one to bounce around painfully so it must be avoided at all costs. Frozen Water is also seen with icebergs sticking out of it displaying it's cold nature.
History[]
Super Mario 64/Super Mario 64 DS[]
Frozen Water appears in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS in the course Snowman's Land. Frozen Water is a cold pool of water that's frozen, looks walkable, and has small ice shards sticking out of it. In these games, one small section of Snowman's land has a pool of water that's been so frozen solid that if one is to jump into it, they will bounce around in the same way they would if they touched Lava and take the same amount of damage. Above the Frozen Water is a platform which the Chill Bully resides on, the Chill Bully must be pushed into the Frozen Water to be defeated and earn the Power Star, two of the Red Coins are also seen above the Frozen Water and Mario must use the Shell to obtain them.
In Super Mario 64 DS, the Frozen Water's functions remain the same and so does it's lethalness level however there is now a Silver Star above the waters instead of two Red Coins (due to the Red Coins being moved inside the redesigned Igloo), once again, the use of the Shell is required to obtain the Silver Star. A more wavy type of Frozen Water appears in the new Chief Chilly Challenge course making up the oceans around Chief Chilly's throne. Chief Chilly must be knocked into the Wavy Frozen Water three times to be defeated. Touching this Frozen Water has the same effects as the one in Snowman's Land.
The Frozen Water commonly causes iceburn however, if Mario is under the effects of the Metal Cap as Metal Mario, he will still bounce around in it (the same way he would if he was normal) but he will not take any damage. In Super Mario 64 DS, when Wario is under the effects of the Power Flower as Metal Wario, he will slowly sink in the Frozen Water (in the same way as he would with the Quicksand in the Shifting Sand Land Pyramid) and must hop out before being submerged. This strategy cannot be used to obtain the Silver Star as he immediately returns to normal upon collecting it.
Super Mario Galaxy[]
Although Frozen Water doesn't appear in Super Mario Galaxy, the Ice Beacon seen in Bowser's Galaxy Reactor functions similarly to Frozen Water causing iceburn and damage upon contact.

Trivia[]
- Despite Frozen Water technically being solid, splashes can still be seen when the Chill Bully is knocked in or when it is surfed on with a Shell, this doesn't happen with the Frozen Water in Chief Chilly Challenge however.
