Freezing water, also named Icy Water or Cold Water, is a variation of Water found in much colder climates throughout the series. Icy Water is generally more hazardous that basic water and one should limit the time they spend in the cold drink. Depending on the game, Icy Water can slowly chip away Health when swam in. Sometimes, it can freeze anyone when takes a dip into an ice cube. Due to it's incredibly low temperature, it's very rare to see any creatures swimming in these frosted lakes commonly, however, Snow Cheep Cheeps can be seen in the lakes. In the 2D Mario games, Icy Water is shown to have no impact on the plumbers and can be swam in in the same way as normal Water.
History[]
Super Mario series[]
Super Mario 64/Super Mario 64 DS[]
Icy Water is first seen in Super Mario 64, in this game, Icy Water is only seen in Snowman's Land on the base of the Giant Snowman, unlike normal Water, if Mario is to swim in Icy Water, he will slowly lose health (even when he surfaces) so it is very crucial to limit the time spent swimming in the cold drink if stumbled into. Spindrifts are seen floating around the Icy Water as well. There is also a much more hazardous version of Icy Water called Frozen Water which is almost identical to Lava and can cause ice-burn rather than frostbite like Icy Water.
In Super Mario 64 DS, Icy Water functions identically to how it did in the original but the Igloo's ice maze has now been replaced with a lake of icy water with stabilized path-like ice platforms with many Coins, Red Coins, and Spindrifts floating around. A pond of Icy Water is also seen in the new course Chief Chilly Challenge where the third Red Coin is located.
Super Princess Peach[]
Icy Water is seen in Super Princess Peach, in this game, icy water is more sapphire blue than standard water but other than that, it is identical to regular water, doesn't cause damage, and Peach can use her Bowlbrella with Perry to swim across the water's surface, Peach can also swim underneath the Icy Water with Subrella. Icy Water is only seen in levels of Gleam Glacier.
Super Mario Galaxy[]
Icy Water appears again in Super Mario Galaxy, in this game, it is seen in the Freezeflame Galaxy in on the Frozen Peak planet. There are four lakes of icy water (all of which are rather shallow), if Mario (or Luigi) falls in, they start losing health the longer they spend in the water so they must get out of it quickly. If one of them grabs an Ice Flower, they can walk across the surface of the Icy Water without an issue whilst creating Ice Platforms. Icy Water is also seen on the Ice-Fire Planet, here, it rises and drains in a tidal manner, whenever, the tide increases Mario/Luigi must seek higher ground until the water levels recede or they will be frostbitten, Urchins can also roll around in Icy Water without an issue. Vulnerable Brrr Bits can also regenerate by bouncing into the Icy Water, in Super Mario Galaxy 2, Icy Water is completely absent and as a result, the Li'l Brrs in that game cannot regenerate however Icy Water can still be found in the game's files.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]
Icy Water is seen yet again in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, in this game, it is only seen in the icy caverns of World 3-3. In this game, Icy Water is perfectly harmless and the Mario crew can safely swim in the drink without any issue, it is closer to the Bottomless pits than average water however.

Mario can capture a Snow Cheep Cheep to swim in the Icy Water harmlessly, with this method, he can grab items such as Power Moons, Hearts, Coins, Regional Coins, and more without any rush to get out of the water. Icy Water is also seen in a section of the Darker Side, Mario must race through the Icy Water to reach the other side of the obstacle course without taking damage.
