The Freezeflame Galaxy is a galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy. It consists of a piece of frozen water, ice, and hot magma. It contains Ice Flowers and Fire Flowers. The Galaxy can be visited if Mario has obtained at least 26 Power Stars, including the Grand Stars from the Gateway Galaxy, Bowser Jr.'s Robot Reactor and Airship Armada, and Bowser's Star Reactor. Its icon depicts the Freezy Peak, Lava Core, and Twin Cave Planets.
Missions[]
Primary Missions[]
The Frozen Peak of Baron Brr[]
Mario must defeat Baron Brr to obtain the Power Star.
Freezeflame's Blistering Core[]
From the starting planet, Mario or Luigi launch to the core of the fire planet. This planet, made of lava, fire, and rocks, seems to be ruins of an ancient civilazation. Also, this planet is one of the few that hold a fire flower. The final area is where you have to jump on moving bricks and aim your fireballs at the alters. After you do this, the gate will open, and a bridge will appear that Mario can use to get across the lava lake to the Power Star.
Hot and Cold Collide[]
During this mission, the icy and fire sides of the Freezeflame Galaxy have began to make contact with one another and Mario must make the Launch Star appear. After Mario reaches the planetoid, he must grab an Ice Flower and skate across the lava tiles until he reaches the Power Star.
Secret Star: Conquering the Summit[]
Conquering the Summit is much like the first level; however, when you get to Baron Brr's Hideout, go to the very right, jump and star spin, and just keep jumping and sliding until you get to a cliff, not far from the hideout. Then, using a sling star, Mario gets to a secret cliff, away from Baron Brr's eyeshot. After dodging boulders and snow bats, they get to the very top of the freeze planet, where the star is. Even though it is cold, there is, however, a fire flower there, where Mario needs to defeat a snowman.
Prankster Comets[]
Frosty Cosmic Mario Race (Cosmic Comet in Orbit)[]
Mario must race Cosmic Mario to the Power Star. This mission is only accessible, unless already completed, if a Cosmic Comet is in orbit. This mission takes place on the planetoid during the end of Hot and Cold Collide but this time, the platforms are icy instead of on fire.
Purple Coins on the Summit (Purple Comet in Orbit)[]
This mission is a Purple Coin mission. It is only accessible, unless already completed, when a Purple Comet is in orbit. In this mission, purple coins are scattered everywhere around the Freezy Peak planet.
Planets[]
Starting Planet (Ice Ring)[]
Mario starts his trek through the Galaxy on a ring of ice with two Boulders rolling around on the inside. It has its own gravitational pull, allowing Mario to walk on the underside. There is a Penguin in the first mission who teaches him how to skate and has to be caught in order to summon a Launch Star to the Freezy Peak Planet. In the second mission, five Star Chips appear and have to be grabbed to summon Pull Stars and a Launch Star that leads the plumber to a lava core planet. The third mission has balls of lava merged with the planet, forcing Mario to watch his movements, and the Launch Star appears on the bottom side, leading to the Temperature Tides Planet.
Freezy Peak Planet[]
This planet is visited during the first mission, and contains a secret Power Star and is the setting of the Purple Comet challenge. Due to how frequently it is visited, it can be seen as the Galaxy's "main planet." The planet is essentially a mountain with three levels of lakes on its front side and a secret platforming challenge on its backside leading to the summit where Mario can find the aforementioned secret Power Star. When Mario lands here, he will land atop a large slide that he has to go down. There are three levels of lakes with freezing water. A Black Hole appears under the planet; if Mario falls off, he will be devoured by the Black Hole, resulting in death. Mario can cross the lakes using the ice platforms, and can find Ice Flowers to turn into Ice Mario, a form that he can use to create more ice platforms by walking on water. Baron Brrr makes his lair at the topmost lake, but is only seen in the first mission and the secret star. Li'l Brrs populate the planet.
Lava Core Planet[]
This planet is the setting of the second mission. It is the largest planet in the galaxy, manifesting as a large sphere of lava with a cooled magma shell, split in half. Ruined buildings can be seen strewn throughout the gap between its two halves, which are connected by small strands of lava. Mario has to traverse the temple-like structures rising from the lava as well as sinking and rolling pillars. A lava variant of Urchin can be found here, and Li'l Cinders are very common. Fire Flowers appear so Mario can light the torches and continue forward.
Temperature Tides Planet[]
This planet is visited in the third mission. It is the smallest of the three major planets in the galaxy, and is spherical with two large openings, one of which (where Mario lands) contains freezing water. The other opening has a lava pool, where Mario will find a double-side cage that contains a Fire Flower. Mario needs to use this Fire Flower to light the torches in the cold opening. The planet's two openings are connected by a small passageway that is blocked by a door that Mario can use by using his Star Spin on a valve on the cold side. The cave's respective liquids rise and fall periodically, and the tides alternate in level.
Square Ice and Lava Platforms[]
These planets are visited during the third mission after Mario solves the Temperature Tide Planet's puzzle. They are square platforms made from pure ice or lava, forming a pathway with alternating Gravity directions depending on their orientation. Mario has to use an Ice Flower to assume his Ice form and freeze the lava platforms. Black Holes surround the tiles, devouring those who fall off the tiles. In the Cosmic Comet mission, the planets are replaced with a nearly identical area called Cosmic Mario's Square Ice Platforms.
Cosmic Mario's Square Ice Platforms[]
Mario visits this area in the Cosmic Comet mission, with the area being identical to the Square Ice and Lava Platforms; however, the lava platforms are replaced by more ice platforms. The is in the same spot where the Square Ice and Lava Platforms should be.
Small Lava Balls[]
As Mario flies into the Galaxy, he flies past three inaccessible spherical planets of pure lava, which look like small stars.
Music Tracks[]
The track that plays on the Galaxy's starting planet is called "Intermezzo," which also plays in the Good Egg and Melty Molten Galaxies when the Dino Piranha starts sleepwalking at the start of his battle and is also played on the starting planets of the Ghostly and Deep Dark Galaxies (as well as on the Boo Mansion Gate Planet and the Boo Race area in the former). When Mario leaves the planet, the music starts to fade, fading completely by the time he gets to the next planet appropriate to the mission.
In the colder regions, namely the Freezy Peak Planet and the north side of the Temperature Tides Planet, the Ice Mountain theme plays. This track starts off as a 6/8 time track at 240 beats per minute in D minor with a simple melody for 20 measures. It then segues into Bb minor for 12 measures, then gives away to C# minor, switching to 160 beats per minute at 4/4 time after 3 bars and continuing this way for another 11 bars before reaching a Csus4 chord that lasts for 2 bars. It then loops back, returning to D minor at 6/8 time at 240 beats per minute. The track lasts for 36 about seconds.
The hotter regions, namely the Lava Core Planet and the south side of the Temperature Tides Planet, use the Lava Path theme, which is an arrangement of the Ice Mountain path in a style similar to the song that Tiki Tong from Donkey Kong Country Returns uses for his boss fight. The track is in 4/4 time throughout the at 160 beats per minute but has the same overall melody and lasts the same amount of time.
The Square Ice and Lava Platforms have the Space Athletic theme, which is based on the Underground theme from the original Super Mario Bros. with the first section in 4/4 time à la Super Mario Bros. 3 and repeated four times. Cosmic Mario's Square Ice Platforms use the Cosmic Comet theme, which is a fast arrangement of the ground theme of the original Super Mario Bros. with an equally frantic arrangement of the aforementioned Super Mario Bros. underground theme.
Behind the Scenes[]
Etymology[]
The Galaxy's name comes from a pun on "Freezeframe."
Trivia[]
- If you look up by the Hot and Cold Planet via first person view, the player will see Star Light floating in the air at the end of the planet. This is the light from the Hot and Cold Collide level. This Star Light is present on all levels, even the Purple Comet Level. It could've been possible that this may've been a secret Star in the beta.
