Flying Squirrel Mario is a new transformation introduced in New Super Mario Bros. U. This transformation can be obtained by getting the Super Acorn and can be used by any character.

General Description

While Mario is in his Flying Squirrel form, he gets red puffy overalls, a gray shirt and shoes, and a big red cap with two squirrel ears on it and a beige brim. On his back, he has a pair of grey membranes and a tail. This appearance seems to be based off of Raccoon Mario. Flying Squirrel Luigi has these changes, too, but wears green cap and overalls. The Flying Squirrel Toads have a cap colored according to their emblem color, with two bright stripes and squirrel ears. They also get a red handkerchief around their neck, gloves, squirrel-like fur, yellow or blue pants, grayish shoes, flying membranes, and a tail. Toads lose their vests becoming Flying Squirrel Toads.

This form is based on the flying squirrels, real life marsupials capable of gliding from tree to tree.

New Super Mario Bros. U

The Flying Squirrel form, along with the Super Acorn, make its initial appearance in New Super Mario Bros. U. While using the power-up, the player can glide by holding down the jump button. While gliding, they can propel upwards with a Flying Squirrel Jump, givig them additional height before descending; unlike the Caped form, they can only do so once before landing. Turning around while gliding will cause the player to descend quicker than normal. They can aslo stick to walls, blocks and pipes but they will start to slide down after few seconds. This form also allows them to Spin Jump higher than normal.

There is a rare variant of this form, the P Flying Squirrel form, can be acquired by picking up a P-Acorn. It glitters and allows the players to perform infinite Flying Squirrel Jumps, it can only be found by catching Nabbit or while on the overworld map.
