Not to be confused with Flying Shy Guy or Propeller Shy Guy.

Fly Guys are recurring enemies in both the Yoshi and Mario franchises. Fly Guys first appeared in a Yoshi game, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, before debuting in a Mario game soon after, Super Mario 64.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

Fly Guys are variants of Shy Guys, of which they have nearly an exact appearance to, except each Fly Guy has a propeller on its head, allowing it to fly. Like regular Shy Guys, Fly Guys have red as the standard color for their robes.

Variants[]

In Yoshi franchise[]

Yoshi's Island series[]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[]

Fly Guy SMW2 sprite

Fly Guys appear as enemies. Most of them are seen carrying something, including a Red Coin, a 1-Up, a Coin, a Winged Cloud, or even a bomb. A Yoshi can defeat a Fly Guy by throwing an egg at it or by swallowing it. If a Yoshi eats a Fly Guy and spits it back out, the Fly Guy turns into a regular Shy Guy. In certain levels, Fly Guys more actively swoop down carrying a Winged Cloud or a Red Coin, and if the Yoshi does not obtain the item quickly enough, the Fly Guy flies back up, making a laughing-type sound.

Introduced alongside Fly Guys are their Whirly Fly Guy variants. Fly Guys can also disguise themselves as exploding balloons called Mock Ups.

Yoshi's Island DS[]

Fly Guy YIDS

Fly Guys return as enemies, behaving similarly as in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, except they no longer carry any bombs. Fly Guys also make a much higher-pitched noise than before.

Fly Guys can appear in the Island Museum when defeated, under the Shy Guy Five of them, one carrying a Red Coin, two with 1-ups, and two with Coins, appeared in the Island Museum. They are found in the Shy Guy exhibit.

Yoshi's New Island[]

Fly Guys return as enemies once more, behaving identically as in earlier Yoshi's Island games. Aside from red, yellow, and green Fly Guys, the game introduces a pink color variation of them.

Tetris Attack[]

A Fly Guy appears only in the background of Lakitu's, on the top right at the top of the high-score in the large box.

Yoshi's Story[]

Fly Guy Yoshi's Story sprite

Fly Guys appear as enemies. They are encountered in groups of four and fly in a diagonal formation in from the side of the screen, stopping in front of a Yoshi. If all four are defeated with one egg, Yoshi is awarded with a melon. Fly Guys appear in three levels, Stage 3-3: Poochy & Nippy, Stage 3-4: Frustration, and Stage 5-3: Shy Guy Limbo.

Aside from Fly Guys, the game introduces similar, normal-sized type later known as Propeller Shy Guy has two propellers attached to its back.
