Fly Guys are variants of Shy Guys, of which they have nearly an exact appearance to, except each Fly Guy has a propeller on its head, allowing it to fly. Like regular Shy Guys, Fly Guys have red as the standard color for their robes.
Fly Guys appear as enemies. Most of them are seen carrying something, including a Red Coin, a 1-Up, a Coin, a Winged Cloud, or even a bomb. A Yoshi can defeat a Fly Guy by throwing an egg at it or by swallowing it. If a Yoshi eats a Fly Guy and spits it back out, the Fly Guy turns into a regular Shy Guy. In certain levels, Fly Guys more actively swoop down carrying a Winged Cloud or a Red Coin, and if the Yoshi does not obtain the item quickly enough, the Fly Guy flies back up, making a laughing-type sound.
Introduced alongside Fly Guys are their Whirly Fly Guy variants. Fly Guys can also disguise themselves as exploding balloons called Mock Ups.
Fly Guys return as enemies, behaving similarly as in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, except they no longer carry any bombs. Fly Guys also make a much higher-pitched noise than before.
Fly Guys can appear in the Island Museum when defeated, under the Shy Guy Five of them, one carrying a Red Coin, two with 1-ups, and two with Coins, appeared in the Island Museum. They are found in the Shy Guy exhibit.
Fly Guys return as enemies once more, behaving identically as in earlier Yoshi's Island games. Aside from red, yellow, and green Fly Guys, the game introduces a pink color variation of them.
A Fly Guy appears only in the background of Lakitu's, on the top right at the top of the high-score in the large box.
Yoshi's Story[]
Fly Guys appear as enemies. They are encountered in groups of four and fly in a diagonal formation in from the side of the screen, stopping in front of a Yoshi. If all four are defeated with one egg, Yoshi is awarded with a melon. Fly Guys appear in three levels, Stage 3-3: Poochy & Nippy, Stage 3-4: Frustration, and Stage 5-3: Shy Guy Limbo.
Aside from Fly Guys, the game introduces similar, normal-sized type later known as Propeller Shy Guy has two propellers attached to its back.
Fly Guys return as enemies. They attack Yoshi by flying right at him. Though red robed Fly Guys assist Bowser in attacking Yoshi's Island during the intro, only the green robed Fly Guys make an appearance.
Fly Guys return as enemies. They attack Yoshi by flying right at him, and dropping bombs. Fly Guys also carry a coin, similarly to the Yoshi's Island games. They player can defeat a Fly Guy by either having Yoshi throw an egg at it, circling the stylus around a Fly Guy, or by having Yoshi eat the Fly Guy.
The red, green, and yellow Fly Guys return from previous games. The game also has blue Fly Guys, which make their debut.
Fly Guys return as enemies. To match the game's handcrafted aesthetic, Fly Guys appear to be made of wool strings. They also appear in a variety of colors. If a Yoshi sticks his tongue onto a Fly Guy, he unweaves it and contains the Fly Guy in his mouth, where the Fly Guy turns into a Yarn Ball. Yoshi can then either directly spit out the Yarn Ball to attack, or eat.
Fly Guys reappear in Yoshi's Crafted World. They tend to be stationary or patrol small areas, and are often used as stepping targets. As with other Shy Guys, they wear pilot attire in Altitude Adjustment, circus attire in Hoop-Jump Hop, and space attire in Outer Orbit.
In Super Mario 64 DS, if Yoshi eats a Fly Guy, he can breathe fire and earn two coins. Fly Guys also appear in two of Mario's minigames, Bounce and Pounce and Bounce and Trounce, both in which the Marios can bounce on them.
Fly Guys appear in the Balloon Racing minigame as obstacles that Yoshi (or Yoshis if played in multiplayer) while making his way to the Airship at the top. Fly Guys also appear in the returning minigame, Bounce and Trounce.
A Fly Guy appears on the board Wario's Battle Canyon. When a character passes, the Fly Guy asks them if they want to either be taken to Bowser, bring another player to the space before him, or do nothing; the first two choices both cost ten coins.
A Fly Guy briefly appears in one minigame, Knock Block Tower where it grabs the treasure chest and flees with it if it is not caught on time.
This is the first appearance of the Fly Guys' aptly named mechanical variant, Mecha Fly Guys, which can be bought as an item in the Mini-Game House.
Fly Guys briefly appear during the opening, where they are carrying in the signs for "Mario Land" and "Wario Land". Their Mecha Fly Guy variants are also the focus on the Mecha-Marathon minigame.
Only one Fly Guy makes an appearance, in Shroom City, where it lives in the Mushroom Condo. If the player helps Fly Guy summon a UFO for his quest, Hey, UFO!, they are rewarded the Morse MakerGaddget.
Fly Guys appear in two minigames, The Final Countdown and Tile and Error, both in which they are seen carrying characters. In The Final Countdown, Fly Guys appear only in the ending, carrying anyone who fell off of the platform back onto it, while in Tile and Error, they carry players who fell off the edge.
Fly Guys appear in various minigames. In King of the Thrill, where they carry the losing team as seen in the background. Additionally, in the same minigame, if two characters fall off at the same time during a fight, a Fly Guy carries the character who falls off just after the other falls off up to the top platform for the next part of the fight (or for the victory if the character falls off during the last part of the minigame). In Mosh-Pit Playroom, Fly Guys carry the basket of balls for the characters to pop, as well as the basket of confetti to rain down onto the champion of the minigame. Two Fly Guys are also seen holding the 8000 points sign in Test for the Best. A Fly Guy can appear in Specter Inspector, where it usually hides in one of the paintings.
Fly Guys appear on the Shy Guy's Shuffle City board, where if a character lands on an Event Space and causes an opponent to move a certain number of spaces, a Fly Guy comes to move that character.
Fly Guys retain their role in the returning Mario Party 7 minigame, The Final Countdown, behaving identically as before. They are also one of the collectible encyclopedia pages, but the encyclopedia incorrectly states that they are absent from Mario Party 7.
A Fly Guy's name can appear on the tournament scoreboard, and when there are strong winds on the hole, a notification appears that depicts some Fly Guys getting blown away by a Fwoosh.
A Fly Guy appears as part of Shy Guy's Special Dash, Fly Guy Dash, carrying the Shy Guy across long distances. Unlike Shy Guy, the Fly Guy will always be red regardless of what color Shy Guy the player uses.
In Fly Guy's trophy scene, Wario and Waluigi try to steal his trophy. Waluigi tries to catch him using an oversized clipper, but Fly Guy spins into the duo, leaving Wario and Waluigi unsuccessful in their attempt to steal the trophy.
Only a few Fly Guys appear as enemies, during specific Paper Toad missions. They do not use Goombas for any of their attacks. Instead, they mostly rely on a bomb they toss back and forth to one another to attack.
