Flippers, also known as one-way gates, are bars that, one time move through, stop complete to the area previous to. They resemble pinball flippers. A Yoshi can open the flippers temporarily if he jumps on one of them.

They debut in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, the flippers reappeared in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 in some World-e levels: Slidin' the Slopes, Doors o' Plenty, Swinging Bars of Doom, Sea to Sky, Puzzling Pipe Maze, and Treacherous Halls. In the game, those flippers are yellow.

A same type of flipper debut in New Super Mario Bros. in World 2-3 only. These flippers are wooden with red arrows on them show which way they stretched out to, and they are meant to see instead in pairs. Flippers are not used in New Super Mario Bros. Wii; however, they reappear in New Super Mario Bros. 2 in a few levels.

Flippers reappear in Yoshi's Woolly World, serving the same function as in previous games.
