The Flip-Out Galaxy is a galaxy that appears in Super Mario Galaxy 2 and its located is in World S. It is unlocked by feeding the Hungry Luma 2,000 Star Bits and is the final galaxy that can be unlocked before the player obtains 240 Power Stars. The galaxy uses the same concept as the Flip-Swap Galaxy from World 1 except for one modification: the player controls red and blue blocks rather than red and blue panels. In this regard, it combines the mechanics of the Flip-Swap Galaxy with Wall Jumping. The player needs to use the walls to their advantage in order to progress through the level. Common enemies here are Spoings, Choppahs and Cosmic Clones, the last of which appear only in the second level. This is the only galaxy where a Green Star is found in a Prankster Comet mission.

The galaxy's name may come from the idiom FLIP-OUT, meaning to lose control of oneself.

Missions[]

Wicked Wall Jumps[]

Mario begins on a small starting planet providing a tutorial for this level’s gimmick, allowing him to practice spinning to switch out the red and blue walls. Here, Mario encounters two Star Bunnies who inform him of this concept. Mario must simply make it past the walls here and enter the Warp Pipe to move on, however, with added movement, he may get on top of the walls to find a 1-Up Mushroom.

When Mario reaches the next planet, he must make it upward using the blocks while adding in Wall Jumps and spins. After the Checkpoint Flag, Mario must make it past spikes which pop in and out at intervals, without Mario’s interference. Turning at the corner, Mario must again make it past the wall, though there are now several small layers of spikes. The first three pop out together, as do the next three, but the last three pop out one at a time. Over the left block gate is a Comet Medal. After making it past the spike section, Mario must turn and Long Jump toward the block gate on the right, spinning before making it on to ensure he does make it and push the blocks out the wall. He must then perform a complete Long Jump to the other gate and collect the Comet Medal.

Now that Mario has completed the spike section, he must simply Wall Jump off a few more blocks, spinning when needed, to make it up to the final platform. Mario must break the crystal sealing the Power Star and collect it to complete the level.

Cosmic Clone Wall Jumpers[]

This Prankster Comet level has Mario navigating the galaxy again except for one modification: Cosmic Clones trailing behind him. They begin appearing as soon as Mario arrives on the Flip Wall planet and they stay with him throughout the entire level, though there are checkpoints scattered across the planet for convenience. Breaking open the crystal containing the Power Star at the end of the level defeats all of the Cosmic Clones.

Green Star 1[]

The first Green Star is found a little off the Starting Planet. All Mario has to do is wall jump between the first red wall and the blue wall to the top of the blue wall, make his wall through the second red wall onto the edge of the planet. There, the player has to have Mario drop down off the platform and aim carefully to land onto the star.

Green Star 2[]

The second Green Star is found in the Cosmic Clone Wall Jumpers mission. Right near the end of the level, the player has to wall jump off the last red wall and avoid spinning the blue wall. If timed right, Mario should land onto the star. This Star is easier to get if the player gets rid of the Cosmic Clones first.

Layout[]

The Galaxy itself only has a couple of planets, each having certain spots called Flip-Out Walls that open up when Mario spins. Just like the Flip-Swap Platforms that flip when Mario uses the Star Spin, these large thick panels go in and out of the walls when this attack is used. Many spots with spikes can be seen and can be very dangerous.

There are also many areas in which Mario must use wall-kicks and the Star Spin together because one wall is red and the other is blue. One other part involves about 5 different flat panels, each having a gap in between each other that is only filled with a tall wall that Mario can unleash by spinning. Each of these panels, however, is equipped with spikes that will come out in a couple seconds from each other; then retract.
