Fire Snakes are one of the recurring fire-based enemies in the Mario franchise. They first appear in Super Mario Bros. 3.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

Fire Snakes are Podoboo-like fire creatures with bodies made up of fireballs, giving the impression of a snake. Since Super Mario All-Stars, Fire Snakes have often been shown to have dotted eyes, but certain games such as Mario Kart DS do not retain this.

Behavior[]

Throughout their appearance, Fire Snakes have had a consistent behavior of hopping around slowly. They can often get in the way of Mario, Luigi, or another character, especially if they are trying to obtain an item within a Fire Snake's range.

In Super Mario series[]

A Fire Snake usually has to be avoided, given the limited number of ways to defeat them. Games such as Super Mario Bros. 3 and New Super Mario Bros. 2 have a certain variety of power-ups that shoot projectiles capable of defeating Fire Snakes, potentially increasing the possibility of Mario or Luigi being able to defeat a Fire Snake.

Super Mario Bros. 3[]

The first appearance of Fire Snakes (spelled Firesnakes in the game's instruction booklet) is in Super Mario Bros. 3, where they appear in the levels of Desert Land. If a Fire Snake sees Mario or Luigi, it starts to chase him by bouncing and trying to collide with him. A Fire Snake can be defeated by either hitting it with a shell or a hammer, by having Mario touch it while he is under the effect of a Starman, by having Mario or Luigi whack it with their tail in either their Raccoon or Tanooki form, or by stomping on them in their Statue form. Defeating a Fire Snake yields 100 points. Mario or Luigi can also make a Fire Snake fall into an abyss, although the Fire Snake reappears a few seconds after they meet their doom.

In the remakes, Fire Snakes have eyes, which they lack in the original Nintendo Entertainment System version.

Super Mario World[]

While Fire Snakes did not appear in Super Mario World, a subspecies called Bound Fire did.

New Super Mario Bros.[]

Fire Snakes also appear as uncommon enemies in New Super Mario Bros. in the stage World 2-5. These Fire Snakes will try to attack Mario by chasing him by bouncing and by trying to touch him, like in Super Mario Bros. 3. The Fire Snakes of New Super Mario Bros. can be defeated by throwing a Shell at them and by touching them when Mario is empowered by a Starman or Mega Mushroom. He can also make them to fall into an abyss, however, they reappear after a few seconds. They only appear twice. They have eyes in this game, similar to in the remakes of Super Mario Bros. 3.

If Mario or Luigi are in their Shell form, they can hide within their Blue Shell to have the Fire Snake ignore them.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

They also appear in the game New Super Mario Bros. Wii acting like they did in New Super Mario Bros., but they have a new ability. After one or two hops, their heads will enlarge, then go back to normal size. They only appear in World 2-3 and can be defeated with a Starman or Ice Balls.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

Fire Snakes reappear in New Super Mario Bros. 2. This time they also appear in lava-themed levels, and behave the same as they do in New Super Mario Bros. They appear in World 2-4 and World Star-7. They can be defeated with the effects of a Raccoon Mario's tail spin, a ball shot from Gold Mario, or by touching it while under the effect of either a Super Star or an Invincibility Leaf. In this game, it is also shown that Fire Snakes can bounce in lava without an issue.

Fire Snakes appear in the Wii U titles New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U as well as their Nintendo Switch port New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe acting exactly as in the predecessors. They also retain the ability adopted in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. In this game, they have their own level called Fire Snake Cavern located in Layer-Cake Desert in which are very common alongside the Fire Bros.. Fire Snakes can now be eaten for any Baby Yoshi. Additionally, the use of the Ice Flower or Starman can instantly destroy a Fire Snake.

Fire Snakes also appear in Mario Kart Wii, acting the same way as they did in Mario Kart DS. They appear on two courses; one of which is Desert Hills from Mario Kart DS itself. They also appear in Grumble Volcano where they are found near the end hopping out of pipes on the side of the course, attempting to spin out any racers that touched one. They have a new appearance in this game; they have eyes on their heads. Racers that are under the effects of a Bullet Bill, Mega Mushroom, or a Starman are unaffected by the Fire Snakes.

Mario Kart 8/Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]

Fire Snakes reappear in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as obstacles for the racers on Grumble Volcano, which returns from Mario Kart Wii. They retain their design from Mario Kart Wii. If a racer is under the effects of a Bullet Bill or a Starman, they are once again unaffected by the Fire Snakes and won't be spun out.

Fire Snakes make a minor appearances in three episodes. One first appears in "Princess Toadstool for President," followed by another in "Crimes R Us," and lastly a few in "Recycled Koopa."

In "Princess Toadstool for President," a Fire Snake is among the enemies to ambush Mario and Luigi when they end up in Dark Land.

In "Crimes R Us," when the Koopalings break in to the Mushroom Kingdom Treasury, they use a Fire Snake to bust a hole in the roof.

In "Recycled Koopa," three Fire Snakes get out of a Koopa Zombie's case to attack Luigi.

Nintendo Adventure Books[]

In Monster Mix-Up, a single Fire Snake suffers the Monster Mixer's effects when a Boom Boom) reveals that he ditched his guard duty and Elmo replaced him. Bowser throws the Boom Boom and the Fire Snake into the device's active part and the two merge into a BOOM BOOM ON FAIAH!! (a Red-hot Troopa variant with a Boom Boom mixed with a Fire Snake/Podoboo) as a part of the punishment the Boom Boom got for not doing his job. The Amalgamate runs around pleading for water and eventually puts out the flames. While the Boom Boom survives this, the Fire Snake is presumably destroyed by the water.
