Wario World is a Nintendo GameCube game developed by Treasure and published by Nintendo. It is the first and currently only Wario game that is a 3D platformer. The player takes control of Wario as he tries to reclaim his treasure from the evil Black Jewel.

Story[]

The game begins with Wario sitting in his castle, laughing while sitting on his throne. However, one treasure in Wario's collection is an evil Black Jewel that had control of the world a long time ago, before the Spritelings of the forest were able to seal it up inside a temple, A few thousand years later, Wario stole the sleeping black jewel from the temple and added it to his collection. Later, on a night a red moon rises, the sleeping jewel awakens, destroys Wario's castle, turns all of his coins into monsters, hides Wario's most precious treasures, gets revenge against the Spritelings by imprisoning all forty of them, and then teleports everything to another dimension, all in about 15 seconds. In order to recover his treasure and his castle, and escape the mysterious dimension, Wario must defeat the realm's many monsters and bosses, recolllect all of his treasures, free the Spritelings, and defeat the Black Jewel once and for all.

Wario in Greenhorn Ruins, a course of the game

Wario World is a platforming game mainly centered around combating enemies, although it requires some platform navigation similar to Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. It has a fairly simple control scheme, using only the A, B, R, and L buttons, to do things such as run, jump, dash, perform fighting moves or use a vacuum-like ability to suck up nearby coins.

As is common for 3D platformers, Wario World has a 'hub' level from which players can access other levels as they unlock them. The game features mostly fixed, limited camera angles, however, giving it a more constrained and traditional feel than Mario's 3D outings. As is befitting of its star, the game also focuses less on acrobatics and more on combat, with Wario able to unleash vicious volleys of fists, plough through his enemies with a shoulder barge (in the traditional Wario Land fashion), and spin his enemies around before piledriving them into the ground, all while uttering "Ex-cell-ent-a!" and "Have a rotten day!.

The level designs are platform-oriented with combat and puzzle-like elements, and tend to have an overall linear design, albeit with many hidden areas and alternate routes. The levels all contain many trapdoors which lead to special platforming or puzzle-oriented challenges, which are largely optional.

The combat allows Wario to use enemies against each other, as he can knock out larger enemies, grab them, and either spin them around, throw them, or piledrive them into the ground and let the resulting explosion take out or stun nearby enemies. Enemies drop coins when defeated, and tend to regenerate if the area is left and returned to later.

Many many of the enemies are variations in different designs to suit the theme of the current level, such as clowns in the circus. The bosses can be considered bizzare, and includes an evil ghost pirate, an enormous dinosaur in a bikini and, of course, an extraordinarily athletic pig wearing only a posing pouch.

Coins are used both to purchase garlic from a Garlic Dispenser, which restores Wario's health, and to come back to life after losing. If Wario dies, he must pay a fee to return to life on the spot. If he doesn't have enough money, the game is over.

Each time the player collects all treasures in a level, a demo set of microgames from WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! is unlocked. These games can only be played by transferring them to a Nintendo GameCube Game Boy Advance Link Cable. After a set of games is downloaded, the Game Boy Advance can be disconnected from the Nintendo GameCube, and it retains the microgames until it is turned off. There are eight total sets of microgames, which can be played infinitely and do not feature boss stages. While each set depicts a different microgame host, all sets utilize the Intro Games intermission from WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!.

Characters[]

  • Wario - Wario is the main character and protagonist in the game. He has plenty of moves, and many tricks up his sleeves that haven't been tried before.
  • The Black Jewel - A magical, sentient black diamond that takes over and transforms Wario's castle. It is the final boss of the game and sports a rather unnerving eye and tentacles.
  • Spritelings - Tiny, fairy-like creatures that aid Wario in his quest. They offer him various of tips throughout his journey should the greedy hero free them from their cages.

Reception[]

Wario World received fairly good reviews mainly involving the platformer style that is similar to Super Mario Sunshine. However, it was heavily criticized for being too short as a reporter on IGN said "It's Luigi's Mansion all over again."

References in other media[]

  • Nintendo NMI Safety Video 2004 - A head of Wario taken from one of his Wario World artworks appears in the training video. In the ending Wario states that his safety is compromised by enemies in Wario World.
